"Don't whine, don't this, don't that, blah, blah, blah!" Well, maybe all the rejections are good for something after all - if nothing else, they are teaching me to trust my own judgment a lot more and write off all the people who try to shape you (me) into something I'm not. Whatever! I'm happy :)
Plus, I'm done trying. There! |
I agree. You learn nothing from rejections and comments unless you want to shoot or present things the way people wish to see them. People need to comment or learn to comment on what they are being shown.
Thelonius Monk said something to the effect that he did what he did, as he did it and wouldn't change. It was up to others to figure it out and come to him. He refused to change his style to appease or be popular.
Do what you do and spend your time and energy strengthening or building on that.

Tsk...tsk...no pouting or I'm going to have to put you in timeout with DrAchoo! (He has his own playroom just for this reason...haha!)
On a serious note, IMHO...I wonder if acceptance from our "peers" (I use that term loosely here) doesn't play a role not so much in judgmentally shaping who we are, but rather in simply sharing our own inner landscape with others. I don't know that isolation is all that healthy. If the teacher and the student create the teaching, then everyone benefits like a flame to a flame...the world should become brighter and warmer place for the sharing and not the opposite...cast into the isolated shadow of doubt as to the quality of our work.
Hmmmmm...just my two pennies...carry on! |

Yeah, you're right, and way, waaaaay too wise for such a young person :) But Steve is right too. It's two different sides to the same thing. You can't work (and flourish) in isolation, but neither can you work just for acceptance, especially not on a limited scale, for example acceptance at one place. Plus getting mad at something sometimes really works, at least for me. It gets me off my derriere, and thinking about doing new things - it gets my juices going :)

I don't wanna be in the same room with THAT guy! And sometimes it's just fine to pout a bit. Really ....

Nah, I decided not to. It's not worth it. It'll just be voted down and rejected, and I happen to like that one quite a bit (it makes a beautiful print). So I'm saving myself the pain :)

Yep...that one is an excellent choice! Dang...I'm too old to take a photo that good...only the young at heart can get away with those lovely colors and composition full of expertly blended sharpness with blur!
However, I suppose art is more about the experienced eye rather than age so since pouting is OKAY now...

As an avid jazz fan, that's an excellent analogy. Monk paid the price for his eccentricities and his distinctive style -- the slippery rhythms, dissonances, long pauses. He held his fingers in ways that would make any piano teacher cringe. People did come around, and he found success eventually, although for Monk, success was just an agreeable by-product of his practicing craft. He was never in it for money or fame. He never compromised. He never conformed. When he felt he had nothing more to offer (and it was at a career high-point) he stopped. Hardly played anything during the last ten years of his life. We can all learn a thing or two from Monk. |

Ultimately it's about connecting with someone somewhere.
I feel that I connect with enough people, doing what I do not to worry about the rest. I do some commercial work and I sell art prints. So, who gives a crap what the general population thinks? They don't pay dividends where I'm at but to some people that's all they have to go on and that's where we get into this funky turf. I do get annoyed when people proffer silly advice on commercial work I've done and sold at a good rate. It's so....annoying!
If I connected with no one...
Then I might want advice.
In Ursula's case, she's received a good deal of high praise and has earned the luxury of going as far out on a limb as she can. She might not connect at the level she has in the past but who gives a f#@k. There's easily enough people who will tap in, to make it worth while but never on a mass scale. Very few people in history go out on a limb and appeal to the masses at the same time.
I like 1x but what it lacks is an eye for subtlety. Almost everything on the site has some boom to it but I don't think the screeners nor the voters would recognize subtle genius if it flew up their butts. The Third World images that they continually publish are so unsubstantial it's almost a testimony to their pedestrian eye but generally speaking they do a good job.
I wish they had a ubique, a posthumous, a melethia, a jutilda...an Ursula(?) on the team to see past the obvious.

I had my share of rejections with 1x. Fine. If I was their screener, the images they did accept would definitely not have made it past my scrutiny. Some of the rejections would have enjoyed priority. But I don't screen for 1x. I have no idea what they're doing there.
I've got a pretty good idea why they're doing what they're doing, and I'm ok with how they're doing it. I wouldn't do it that way, but it's easier to improve something that already works reasonably well than making it better to start with.
If I did screen or had any editorial input, I'd invite, at least, three submissions at a time, so as to be able detect some coherence between several entries and to steer any member critiques in the same direction. Of course, when you submit a single entry, a subtle aesthetic or a quirky composition can easily go unrecognized, which, IMO, is a shame when the overall (site-) ambition is to assemble excellence.
This is less critical for an challenge-based social environment like DPC. For 1x and sites with a like purpose, it is, the way I see it so far, somewhat regrettable -and this despite the fact that much fabulous and exciting photography is showcased there.

The 'impact' rejection should be applied more freely than it already is, if by 'impact' one means 'i have seen a variation of this shot 7,589 times now and it moves me as much as the salad i had for lunch'. |
You have no idea how many times I've wanted to say that. :>)

Ahhh...I adore you to pieces and am happy to see you in more cheerful spirits!
I think we owe Deb a BIG thank you for posting this thread and allowing us all a place to pout and more importantly a place to share our thoughts and frustrations when any one of us feels the "ouch!" of rejection as well as the bloom of success.
Many thanks to Deb!!!

I don't think rejection is "tasted" so much as it is forced down between choking and gagging breaths...;-/
Of course, here in the Peanut Gallery, I sip mine as daintily as possible though...;-)
P.S. Besides, I know you will be busy shooting for the Animals in Motion challenge to redeem yourself from your promised (yet never delivered) entry for the horse challenge...;-P
(Edited to add more mischief...)

Now, I feel like total dirt but you did it all wrong. You took a straight, serious, formal portrait. There's no "A-Liciousness". Afghanistan is 3rd world to the 5th power, for the record...in my book, anyway.
Anything too western kills the vibe, for starters. In this case, maybe the formality.
Candid or slightly candid, muddy dwellings, cracks in the walls, farm animals...Kalashinkov's, opium pipes, anything you'll never see in Indiana...now, we're talkin. Everything before the Kalashinkov's and after the opium pipes you could nail in your sleep. Of course, I'm talkin from my butt in the relative safety of Mid-Town Manhattan but you know what I mean.
...did I mention, I love the shot? |
here one more utterly mundane.

if i were in india, i could have beaten ursula i think.
