Sorry for putting two questions on in 5 minutes, but I'm beginning to think I have something weird happening - are there any electrically minded people out there who would care to comment on this strange phenomenon?
My mac has been giving me trouble to no end, I've posted about it several times before and after hearing the logic board has gone twice in 3 months, I've been considering buying a replacement, or at least a backup computer so I can get my work done.
BUT, at the same time, my mobile phone has been acting very strangely, and only when its sitting near the computer. It goes to a white screen and simply locks itself up, can't turn it off without taking the battery out, and it takes several goes to get it working again. It never happens at any other time, only when its sitting on my desk.

Is it at all possible that I have some strange kind of electrical field around my computer area that is messing with the computer and phone, or is it possible for the computer to be messing with the phone? I know that sounds ridiculous, and I feel stupid for asking, but this is as good a place as any to ask a silly question ;-)
Seriously, anyone heard of any such phenomenon, or am I just having a run of bad luck? (or should I give up and go to more earthly delights.....lol)

Electric fields are not at all uncommon and at or near computer is a pretty likely place to find it. I would start with any extension cords / multi plug adapters you have at or near the computer, those are the most likely candidates. Phone / camera / battery chargers or anything that converts AC to DC (pretty much everything electronic) can also produce fields.

See if you can get hold of a compass and see how it reacts in and around the area, or you can get specialised electrical equipment for measuring these things but the compass is probably easier to come by. If it starts pointing in random directions or jumping all over the place that will tell you that you have a electromagnetic field coming from something.

You might also want to invest in a power regulator, not just one of those ones that protects surges, but one of the little battery backed desktop UPS devices you can get. They are much better at regulating power and I don't think they are overly expensive. I used to have an APC one which was fairly small, though very heavy!

Some people just cause problems with electrical stuff as well! My wife has a history of breaking fuses, circuit breakers, light bulbs, tripping the entire houses power, things like that!

Lol, thanks again Iain - I'm beginning to wonder if I'm like your wife - I just got in my car and the door light (on the ceiling) refused to turn on.....nothing wrong with the globe, if I switch it on manually its fine.
I'll see if I can find my son's compass - good idea, and thanks for not making me feel like a loony! :-)

Any computer with the old style glass display tube will have MUCHO electric fields created by the monitor. They will extend several feet around the monitor. LCD not as much. I wouldn't think these fields would bother the average cell phone that operates on 700, 800, or 1900 MHZ. (You're in OZ so I might not have your freqs right) If they did interfere I would only expect it to happen in areas where the cell signals were very weak. Then the phone should just act like it lost the cell tower signal and indicate it was searching for service.

As an aside, these monitors generate so much signal that in the 80's, 90's it was rumored that the NSA had equipment that could pick the signals up and re-construct what was on the display as far as 100 yards away. Google Tempest.
