Hi all - does anyone have the facts and figures on the top of their heads about the conversion between cropped and full frame sensors for lenses? I just need to know what 24mm on full frame converts to on cropped sensor?

On your D300 it's 1.5x... so 36mm.

1.6x for most Canons, 1.3x on 1D series.

Thanks guys, but I'm still confused - maybe I should give more info - I'm about to buy a D700 with a 24-70, and need the width of the 12-24 that I currently have on the D300 (or at least 14). Will the 24 end on the D700 cover the same angle as the 12 (or 14) on the D300?

The 12 on the D300 will give the same as an 18 on the D700, and the 14 will look like a 21 (if there was such a thing).

For the D300 just multiply the focal length by 1.5 and you'll have what it would look like on a D700.

ETA:

Enjoy your D700, I love mine and I've been dying to get that 24-70 lens!

If you want to go wide without spending a fortune, I recently picked up an 18-35 on Ebay for AUD500 and it's pretty wide on the D700, it's what I use most often now for my street stuff. It's only drawback is it's not completely sharp in the corners and it's got a bit of weird distortion going on!

Thanks Iain. Looks like I have to keep the 12-24 - was really hoping I could get away with selling it to help fund the other gear. Isn't that exchange rate a killer at the moment - $7300 for just the body and 1 lens :-(

If you use your 12-24 you'll only get 5MP from the D700.

When I first got mine I was upgrading from a D70s, the only usable lens I had was the 50mm you have, which is great on the D700, super sharp all over and I made do with it until I managed to save a bit, made me more creative! But like i say, if you're set on wide the 18-35 is a pretty good option rather than splash out the 2700 or so on the 24-70.

I've managed to find the 24-70 at $2400 up on the Gold Coast, which is much cheaper than most other places, and they're offering 22 months interest free, so I don't really want to pass up the opportunity. I really need the body for low light situations as I'm booked to shoot a classical music festival soon, plus weddings etc - so I can't afford to lose any length in any direction. For portraits and weddings I'm planning to throw the 24-70 on the D700 for the majority of shots (with the Sigma 70-200 on the D300 for long shots, although if its dark I'll have to use the D700.....this is getting confusing......aaarggghhh). I don't actually want to go really wide for most things, its just that I'm on a retainer with a real estate company so have to have that ability - they pay my bills :-)
Does that make sense or am I missing something? Very happy for advice before I hock my life away!

Yep, makes perfect sense, and I would say if you get the chance to get the 24-70 with the D700 then go for it.

I just checked the place I usually buy my lenses and they are doing the D700 + 24-70 for 6500, which is 800 cheaper than you've been quoted, don't know that they do credit though, but it would be worth giving them a call to find out.

Have a look here, I've bought a few things from these guys, one of the few that always has what I want in stock:
