Well, based on the top 11 finishers, the results are conclusive: if you want to score with a postcard in DPC don't bother shooting in daylight. Maximize your odds with a night shot, or a dawn/dusk shot. I'm just saying... :-)

Mmm hmm... And the frogs come out and sing at night, is there a connection? But if a water drop falls in the dark, does it make a pretty splash if there's nobody there to see it?

Everyone sees it because the flash illuminates it from the sound trigger.

Also nice to note that the DPC card stock comes now in three flavors, classic 4x6, the exciting Full frame, and the dazzling square shape. I hope the folks who make postcard racks are ready for the revolution;-)

I got one comment on my dusky postcard entry that it would have been better as a nightshot, oh well next time I'll know, less light = better shot.

While most of you were spending your evenings/nights drinking beer/wine/whiskey/whatever, some of us were out working hard!

I thought yours was perfect.

It didn't cross my mind that a postcard isn't normally in a vertical format, until I looked at the results. I made the same "mistake" in Postcard 3 as I did in 2. And if a vertical format is used, the text should probably go on the top so it shows in the rack.

Well last time only 3 were shot in the afternoon but one had a very heavy hand of HDR so that one doesn't really count and mine which finished 10th was darkened a bit at the top so not sure if that counts too much but the general look of it was daytime at least. The other one was mpeter's which had that out of the camera day time look to it so that was probably the only legit daytime photo that scored high as is (i.e. without polarizers, post processing etc to make it more dramatic).

Does anyone here cringe when a real life person says to you, "Wow, your picture would make a great postcard"? I know it's meant as a compliment but even if postcard style images are your thing, there are so many horrible images being sold in postcard racks. DPC's postcards run circles around a great majority of those being sold. IMHO.

I'd rather they say that my image would make a great calender shot! That's a little better than a postcard isn't it? :P

I just resign myself to the fact that I shoot 'pretty, post card style' shots and express my appreciation for their comment.

Yeah I think that hurt a lot of people. It's interesting that some voters considered the horizontal format more postcard-like but using a theme like the blue ribbon winner was ok. Nothing against that entry as it looked nice and all but the theme isn't something that is directed at tourists which is what postcards target. That said it was the smart move since the audience in this challenge was not tourists.

That's what I did, but it didn't help much. A vertical orientation was kind of necessary based on my "iconic" subject matter ...
