so i have a new GPS enable phone. a blackberry storm 9530. got it yesterday - so i don't know everything about it yet...

i have two options for mapping directions and the like via GPS. google maps mobile, and the blackberry map app. they both seem to work. but i am curious how to get the actual longitude and latitude coordinates - rather than just 10m from such and such an address...

any ideas - is it possible ?

I have google maps on my G1, and I'm not finding any way of getting the coordinates of a place either.

you know the phone has them - or it wouldn't know where we were... :)

so spit them out ---- err !

my thought was that since the 30d doesn't have the gps feature - i could snap a pic with the phone. and then use the 'real' camera. then copy the exif coordinates from the phone pic to the lightroom metadata of the 'real' pic...

I just got this app for my iphone -- I don't see that they have this for other phones, yet, but worth watching. There may be some "hack" that lets you see more raw data from the phone. I seem to recall that there was a hack for an older phone I had some time back-- a troubleshooting mode with a code entry that revealed lat/long (but I think it was a big hassle, and I only did it once to see if it worked). There may be a hack like that for your specific phone--google it and see whatcha get :-)

AH HAH. i think i figured it out. we'll test it out.

install the flickr uploader app.

if you have a blackberry storm. go into the BB maps app. turn on GPS navigation.

open the camera app. go to it's options, and enable geotagging.

take a photo ( you have to upload from the location you took the photo or flickr won't have the right coordinates ).

go to the flickr uploader app, and chose the photo - under the upload options chose 'Where am I' and upload the photo.

you will probaly get an error saying it couldn't find your location - but the data is actually there.

under the file on flickr ( more properties ) you'll have the coordinates listed in the exif.

neat !

ETA: don't forget to turn off the GPS function when you're done - or it'll likely eat up your battery way too fast. you can leave on in the camera app - the little icon will turn from white to red when GPS is turned off in the maps app.

according to a google search this is the coordinates of nearby burlington - just to double check accuracy of phone.
