I'm not sure this is a real term, but it is the term I have used to describe a type of shot that I find I have a liking for. I also see a lot of similar shots from others. A semi-abstract is an identifiable subject, but approached in a manner that focuses on the details of it, rather than looking at the whole item. Colors, textures and shapes are the real subject, the object itself serves simply to convey it to the camera.
