1. This photo was shot with strobes inside softboxes.
2. Left-side had the White Balance set as "Flash" in Adobe Camera RAW.
3. Right-side had the White Balance set using the ACR pick tool on the 18% grey area of the card.

It seems to me that using the WB card is causing a blue cast. WTF have I screwed up? Any enlightenment would be much appreciated, thanks!

I am not a lighting expert by any means. A newbie to that black art, in fact. My initial observation, however, is that the WB card is not in the direct light, but in the shadows. That could affect it.

Two things: position the card in an "average" area of your lighting setup (not directly on the bright side, nor in the shadows). Second, zoom in and try to fill the frame with the card- take a shot and use that to set your white balance.

The other option is to use the WB card for editing corrections. Open the image in Photoshop, go to Levels and click the gray part of the WB card with the gray eyedropper tool. You'll get pretty close to accurate color.
