I got an email from Schmaps today asking to use one of my photos in the 6th Edition of their Chicago map. A couple others have said they're legit, so I'm gonna go through with it I think. Anyone else had any experiences with them that they'd like to share?

not to seem rude or anything but what does that picture (of a couch in a back yard) have to do with Chicago? I know they have some run down areas but why would they put that on a map?

Good luck if they do use you, that'd be cool.

They've added four (or is it five?) of my shots so far. But I'm not a pro, and don't earn a living from photography. They are definitely legit; the issue is whether you're ok with their using your shot for free.

I just got a request from Shmaps for this picture for the Seattle guide. I'm not a pro and make no money from photography, and since they asked for permission, I said what the hell, everyone loves views on their flickr profile. Also I did get permission from the Seattle Aquarium to use the picture since they state you need permission for commercial use.

Not that I'm into stock photography but it is no wonder it is so hard to make a living at it anymore. It always amazes me how easy it is to get people to give away their photos. It is kind of like being an extra in a movie, everyone wants to see there face on the big screen so they allow themselves to get used by the film industry.

Sorry, I just had to say it. No offense meant to anyone in particular.

No offense taken, but can I ask two questions: 1) What do you do for a living? and 2) Why do you take pictures?

And to be fare I will answer those first:
1) I consult on the design and qualification of oxygen systems on commercial aircraft.
2) For fun, and ultimately so that people can see them. How better than to have them included in something like Schmaps.

While I'm sure I am hurting the stock photographers; and the newspaper market as I don't read newspapers; and cobblers as I just buy new shoes; and the blacksmiths as I don't own a horse; and etc. I'm just not sure I feel bad about it. Times change and industries change and people need to change too.

I fail to see how this hurts stock photographers. Schmaps uses pictures from peoples' Flickr accounts. If they were in the stock photography market and suddenly decided to get pics for free from Flickr users, I could see that. But not how it is currently.

Because 30 or 40 years ago, for Schmaps to get pictures like that they would have had to use stock photos on the website.

You gotta check with Al Gore on that one.

of course there were.

hippy camps - with tents spread in a circle around a central fire pit. the paths from each tent to the central fire pit - viewed from above - looked much like a spider web.

and at the time the airforce dubbed them WebSites...

of course the hippies were 'blown' away by the term, and went on to create the internet. a virtual rendition of the original WebSites...

come on now - you've got to know your history ! :)
