I just saw these at the local craigslist.

Are they any good for the asking price?

Nikon AIS 35-105 3.5-4.5 Macro NEW Condition $200
135mm/f2.8 Non-AI or AI-S Both Clean and Mint $150 or $200

Ohh, and I would want to use them on a D90. What else will I miss besides auto focus?

I am also reading this article on the side.

Thanks for your help.

No! They all are crap! ;)

It is Aprils Fool's day after all.

Honestly I know nothing of any of those lenses or the camera bodies they would go on.

Anybody else have any more useful info on these lenses?

P.S. April Fool's is officially over, so this is a serious help seeking thread.

The name of the lens you linked to is not the same as what you called it. You linked to a 105 mm 1.8 AIS lens.

Oops.

Correcting the links now...

Hi Prash, the 35-105 lens is junk (no offence)... and the 135mm f/2.8 was good back in the MF days... don't bother with it...

save your money and get a nice newer lens... I just checked your profile...

you have a sick lens!!! 16-85!!! what do you want your next lens to do for you? maybe I can suggest one..

I have been buying and selling lenses for a couple years and a great deal of nikon lenses have passed through my hands (I have had both lenses in your original post)...

let me know what you want this new lens to do for you...

Sorry, Prash, my post is worthless for you. While The E-Bay Guru is here ( Shutter-For-Hire), is $30 for the 50mm 1.8 in decent condition a worthwhile price? Pictures I've seen so far are meh so condition is hard to say for sure.

is it a MF lens? Series E ??

that lens is TACK sharp... here's a pic I took with it
.

$30 is a good price as long as it has mint glass, smooth focus, and snappy apperture blades free of oil (although oil was never really a problem with that lens...)

The 135 2.8 goes pretty cheap on eBa. That's probably the 135 2.8 Nikkor Q . You will have to have it "Ai'd" to be able to mount it on your digital. I have one of them that I bought for about $15, and I trimmed the aperture ring myself to make it so that I could use it on my Fuji. It's a very sharp lens if you stop it down to f4.
You can use the older Ai or Ai'd lenses, but may lose metering, and of course you have to manually focus. The back of the aperture ring on the "Non Ai" lenses is smooth all the way around, and usually extends a little beyond the flat part of the mounting flange. The "Non Ai" ones will bend the little lever that sticks out of the camera body to sense when the aperture is set at minimum. Look carefully at the mount on your camera, and you will find it at the lower left of the mount when looking at the camera from the front with the lens off.
I can't say much about the 35-105. I have the 50-135 Ai-S, and I like it a lot..
This site has excellent actual field use evaluations of most of the common Nikkor lenses in all price ranges. It's been pretty accurate so far with predicting how the ones that I have purchased have performed.
Bjorn Rorslett's Lens Evaluations Page
If it's a Nikkor lens worth having, it's probably there.
ETA,
Tax time is not a great time to shop for used lenses because a lot of people are kicking the auction prices up with their tax refund money.

Thanks Waddy, Eric, Derek.

Well I havent decided yet on what will my next lens be. Most probably it will be a telezoom.. the 70-300 VR I guess.

I got curious when I saw these MF lenses on sale (or so I thought). I guess I will save up then.

Of course my dream lens is the 70-200 f2.8. But I like going step by step. One day......

Well I started with the 18-200vr and loved it. Got the 50mm f1.4 and really liked it. Sprung for the 85mm f1.4 and cannot stand to take it off my D90--I frakkin LOVE the 85!!! Pricey bugger but worth saving for. Barely used the other lenses since I got it.

Thanks. Yea I have 85mm prime short listed.. but as you said, its gonna blow a missile sized hole in me wallet.

Just remember AI and AI-s lenses won't meter on your D90.
04/03/2009 03:44:11 AM · #14
Yea I read about that too. I thought a sub-$100 lens, even if it is MF and non-metered, may be fun for macro or something. Hmmm.

Prash, PM sent.

If you want macro without spending a ton of cash, the 55mm Micro Nikkor Ai is a very common lens that can be found for under $125 if you are patient and watch eBa.
Manual focus is best for macro for shooting outside. I use a monopod and the 55 M N for stationary things, and the 105 for shy things that may fly off if I get too close. If you are that close to the subject, it's easy to fine tune the focus by moving the camera in or out a little.
I have an 85mm 1.8 Nikkor H C that has been Ai'd. That is a kick butt lens too. Love that thing because it is amazing sharp and just feels right when it is on the camera. It also does nice macro with an extension tube attached.
My S3 Fuji does not meter with the older lenses, but it only takes a shot or two to figure out how to get exposure right by using the LCD.

I've seen some nice images taken with that lens. I think it has good bang for the buck.

I had one of these and honestly it was just plain too heavy and I was always afraid I was going to break a 1400bux lens. So I got rid of it. I also found for what I shoot, 200 isn't long enough. Of course I can't afford the new 600mm F4 VR either. I'd be scared to leave the house with it anyway.
