As I am going through the images voting, I have noticed 3, maybe 4 shots so far (and I haven't voted on many) that seem tilted to the left. Normally, that wouldn't strike me as odd, but I haven't seen any to the right. My question is (and as silly as it sounds, I am being serious) am I just seeing things, or are they really tilted that way?

It may be intentional. We read left to right so an advertiser tries to lead the eyes across the page with their products by placement.

That makes sense, although it makes me feel like I'm sliding off of the screen. :-) I was just making sure I didn't need to make an emergency trip to the chiropractor this weekend to get everything lined back up!

Well, it depends why their tilting.

The most annoying tilts are when you do a dead..front on shot of..say..a bottle. The shot is meant to be straight up and down but..when comparing the side of the bottle to either side of the photo edge it is not parrallel.

That is agitating...

Now..If you pretend your camera is floating like...a helicopter..(whatever) and you pan at an angle and maybe add some vertical shift up or down (versus dead on) to an object it can give an obvious tilt to the object that ..depending on other elements in the photo..can add drama to the photo.

I do not like to take dead on shots. They are very hard because you have changes in perspective that may happen in the optics, or you may be ever so off to an angle that destroys the perfect symetry of the object.

Humans are very funny that way. If something is going to be imperfect we would rather have it be obviously so than annoyingly so :-)

there is some confusion. when you are looking up at something from below, it will become foreshortened. the sides appear to slant inwards. they are no longer parallel with the side of the frame. even if it's straight up and down, like a building, or a bottle, it becomes pyramidal.

this effect of converging lines is caused by 'perspective.' the lines are converging towards a 'vanishing point'. go out and look up at a tall building from right in front. you will see what I mean :)

Exactly mag....I was mainly thinking about actual mistakes in allignment that occur when trying to get centered symetry. You can use converging/diverging as an element obviously but if you try to get centered symetry and are slightly off (one side diverging/converging more than an other) then you can mess an image up.

I just always go for the angled shot with convergence/divergenc. That way I got so many angles being formed it throws anybody off looking for symetry..hehe..........
