I went into my report writing/journalism class today and was recruited to take some photos for the college newspaper. Tonight there is a basketball game I was asked to take photos at for kind of an application for the position. Does anyone have any great tips for taking sports photos?? |

For basketball I shoot with the 80-200 f2.8 Nikkor. I often sit in the corner near whichever net the team you are shooting for (which college newspaper) is going towards. I find it best to just sit there and shoot that way, sometimes using a monopod. Lighting can be difficult as in NCAA I often find they do not want you using flash. Hopefully the gym has some good lighting. Zoom in close, get emotion and players faces, try to ALWAYS have the ball in the photo. While celebration or dejection photos can be really nice, college papers rarely use them. These are some of my best tips. Oh yeah... unless you desperately can't get a photo... do not shoot all of the free throws, they are severly overused, and looked down upon. Hope this helps!

There is no one more qualified than Talya to give you these pointers. Take them, and follow them.

Just the girl I was hoping to hear from. I've always loved your sports photos and your tips were great. I wouldn't have thought about the free throw thing. I hope that I can get away with a F3.5 lens tonight. If I get some good shots maybe they'll keep me around and have me do pictures for them all year. Thank you again for your tips. |

RG hasn't a CLUE what she's talking about, as evidenced by this picture
