I'd prefer a wrist if I could, but Nikon hasn't come up with a nice combo the way Canon has. My thinking on the Neck Strap. If my camera doesn't deserve my full attention, then it should be in the bag. |
unless im using it as a stabilizer, or if im using a big lens on an slr. either that or im walking around all day with the thing ready to shoot.

Absolutely agree. One of the first things I did when moving up to an SLR all those years ago was to buy a third party strap, which is still in perfect condition and completely anonymous. I will actually even use the neck strap when putting my camera on the tripod - I do have complete 'all risks' insurance, but when taking shots on cliff edges (as I often find myself doing) it only takes one minor slip and it's all gone...
In general, I don't carry my camera around visibly anyway. I have (again) an anonymous SLR backpack which holds everything, and I only normally take the camera out when I'm ready to shoot. If you are concerned about walking around with a camera in a busy area, I recommend such an arrangement, accompanied by a framing card which will allow you to test out compositions without getting your camera out.
Funny enough, I also have a green tripod case, and I'm usually more concerned about people thinking I'm carrying a gun rather than camera equipment ;)

After many years of travelling with a camera & being paranoid it will be snatched, when I am using my camera I wrap the neck strap 3 times around my wrist so the camera is secure, but not inhibited by the neck strap. |

I always wrap the neck strap around my wrist...
It's best i think if you're photographing the social life of people, if you have the strap around your neck it's going to be distracting for the people and that won't be as "natural" because they know you're there, if you have it wrapped around you're wrist you can keep it along your side until something interesting happens...

i don't think it makes you look like a geek, when you're carrying a really sweet camera :) (now all i need is the super sweet camera!) |
I know what your talking about till I can afford a better one! I only have a wrist strap but I carry my camera always in the cute little bag over the shoulder and under the arm! After reading this thread though I got an idea to use one of those keychain like neck straps with the little hook on it (easier access then putting back in bag and zipping and unzipping all the time).

that's exactly what my tamrac strap has. it has quick-release buckles on the ends. i think it only cost me like 15 bux or something like that, and it's a pretty high quality strap. i've been using it now for like 6 months or so and i love it :) tamrac's stuff is usually pretty pricey, but 15 bux for a good strap isn't that outrageous, i don't think.

My camera is too small for a neckstrap, but honestly, I would love one because really, I am a geek! I have to settle for the wrist strap for now until I can afford a bigger and cooler camera (which could take a while) |
