found out that I'll be getting over $1500 from my tax return.. I have always lusted over the Nikkor 24-70 2.8. Never thought I would ever get there, but am now.
I have been in the market for this focal length, despite shooting a D300.
I have looked at the Sigma, Tokina's, and Tamron's. All have some kind or compromise that I am sure if I can't ever work around. (such as, poor AF,QC issues, poor build quality, or simply unreliable)
Yes, I have primes, but sometimes you just have to use a zoom for the job.
I don't make a ton of money from my photography, nor I am a full time photographer. I do have some paid gigs booked this summer, but won't add up to $1700, to break even. (this summer)
So, my question is, should I get it or wait for something else?
NO, I am not interested in the Nikon 17-55 2.8!
NO, I am not interested in the Tamron's, their AF system is too sloppy and slow.
I normally shoot with 35mm and 50mm primes, so I wont really miss the 17-23mm range. (I also plan on possibly getting the new Nikon 10-24mm 3.5-4.5 (rumored) to add to the collection. |

Can't find it anywhere locally. Otherwise, YES, I have looked into it. I am not too sure about it wide open... The only one I have played with had a bit of purple fringing at 2.8... Bu I have my eyes pealed for it. |

I'm surprised that you had purple fringing with the 28-70 2.8 lens on the D300, I'm assuming you used it on the D300! There is a noted problem with vignetting on the D3 and D700.

I would get it.... it is actually the next lens on my wish list, and I hope it will replace the kit lens that I got with my D70 years ago (Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED).
The first zoom lens I bought was the Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6D ED. I bought it because it was relatively cheap... but I wasnt happy with the performance. Years later I got the Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR DG IF-ED, and was much happier. So, to save money, I never go cheap on lenses again... I just save up and wait.
So... if you can afford the lens after your tax refund, and dont need that money for anything else, I would say Go For It. |
