As long as this thread was dredged up, I put together my new system in January. Here's what I assembled. Total cost was between $650 and $700:
-ASUS M3A78-EM Motherboard
-3 GHz Athlon X2 6000+ dual core CPU
-Windows Vista home premium 32 bit (Planning on moving to 64 bit with Windows 7)
-Diamond Radeon 4650 video card
-Thermaltake V1 CPU cooler (Note: This cooler is a PITA to install on an AMD socket, the heat pipes are in the way of the tensioning mechanism)
-Maxtor 1 Terabyte SATA hard drive (Data drive, 3 partitions)
-Samsung 350 GB Sata drive (OS & applications, 3 partitions)
-4 GB Corsair DDR2 800Mhz ram
-Antec Sonata III case w/500w Earthwatts power supply
-LG dual layer SATA DVD burner with lightscribe
-Bay mounted card reader
-Nifty bay mounted drawer to hold important stuff like flashdrives and my shoehorn.
-Monitors, keyboard & rodent were reused from existing system.
A casual and unscientific speed test shows it to perform about as expected. I took an 8MP photo and ran a heavy noise reduction pass on it in PaintShop Pro.
Old PC: Athlon 2000, 1.25 Gb ram: 98 seconds
Work PC: 1.8Ghz Core 2 Duo, 1 Gb ram: 48 seconds
New PC, Athlon X2 6000+, 4 Gb ram 32 seconds

I'd go for a Q6600 and OC it, they're amazing processors, Intel shot themselves in a foot a bit with this processor as it's performance far outstrips its price.
The Ati 4870 is an excellent card, I'm going to save up for one. |
