Howdy,

I know the rules state that borders are legal provided it is a clear border. You can't make vignettes though.

My usual technique for borders (as such) is making a 6 pixel stroke on a seperate layer and blurring it with guassian blur so it darkens the edges and gradually dissipates making the centre the focal point. Would this be legal in basic? I know it comes down to subjectivity as to whether it constitutes a "clear border" or not.

What you reckon?

I'm talking about a border like this:

I don't believe that's legal, it is not clear and just looks like vignetting. "Clear" I would think would be defined as a hard edge, if this method were legal it would circumvent a lot of editing rules.

I dunno if it's legal or not, but I *LOVE* the shot of the pissed-off camel! LOL!!!

Bollocks. I was worried you'd say that.

Back to the drawing board!

Doubt if it is legal (I agree fully with AP). Suspect you'll be looking pissed off like this camel when the DQ rolls in.

And not to be an ass but can I get the SC opinion on this? Conjecture is all well and good but a defining line would be most appreciated.

I know of a shot that was DQ'ed for using a similar type border.....one that looked like a vignette. This will get you DQ'ed.

This is the photo I was thinking of. She used a buttonized black frame.

Send a ticket to SC with your before and after...and do it fast, before time runs out.

This is not a question of subjectivity -- you can't do this in Basic because you are not allowed to make that layer where you apply and blur the stroke. The only layers allowed in Basic are Adjustment Layers which contain no selections/masks.

what about doing it like this. It may not look the same as vignettes but on a dark picture its close.

this is just a quick sample.

1. Using the Marquee tool go around the outside of the image.
2. Goto Select > Modify > contract and use 20 pixels.
3. Now go back to Select > Modify > feather 20 pixels.
4. Goto Edit > Stroke 50 pixels - Centered.

All on the original layer.
