You still have not given us the dimensions of the gadget. That may be the clue to what it was actually used for.

Length with the cover removed is just over 8.5 inches, width is about 2.5"

I donno, it might very closely mimic the arc of the original Ark of the Covenant, assuming the original Ark had an arc, so it might yet be a clue.
