Sometime last night the mode decal popped off my almost-two-month-old Canon Rebel XSi. Not sure when it happened. *shrug* I tried to get Canon to just send me the decal and I'd glue it back on myself, but they said they don't do that. So, I've got to send it to them to repair/replace. Think they'll notice the smoke smell? *grin*

That's me on the ladder, right after I cut the hole that the flames are shooting out of.

Towards the end the fire got so hot we had to move the trucks further away from the building. All in all I took over 500 photo's last night. These are just some quick resized shots (no editing other than resize).

Hopefully that house was unoccupied! And nah, they'll never notice the smoke. Or the melted body parts...

Great shots!

That did some awfully good shots in those conditions. I've been wondering how much low light improvement there was from my Rebel XT to the XSi. What lens and settings were you using for those?

Here's one from when we first started...

I guess this is where I say that we started this fire with the intent on burning the building to the ground (we succeeded). We actually have one more neighboring building to burn down. All of these photo's were taken with the following range of settings (photo properties have been updated):

Shutter: 1/128, 1/64, or 1/32; with 1/64 being the most common
ISO: 200, 400, or 500; with 400 being the most common
Aperture: 4, 4.6, 6.4, or 8, with a tie between 4 and 4.6 being most common.
The lens was the kit lens "Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS" I would have loved to have used a fisheye for the interior shots, but I don't own one. The smoke played havoc on the AF, and I couldn't really get the viewfinder close enough with my mask on to manually focus.

Flash was only used in two of the shots (the interior one posted above) and the one with the firefighters sitting on the hose in front of the house. In the lower left corner of that shot you can see part of the light tower we had set up for the scene. We also had some smaller lights from the engines. Other than that the only light we had was from the fire.

As for melted stuff...I had something drip on me (I still don't know what) and several people melted items on their gear.

My job last night was actually to try and acclimate a newbie to doing interior work. She always freaks out if she has to go into a building while it's on fire. She's on the left in the above picture. She did great last night. She lasted for longer than anyone thought she would and we ended up leaving not because of a panic attack, but because both our knees were hurting from kneeling on them for so long. Admittedly, she did have a death grip on me the whole time, but one step at a time.

Let's hope Canon doesn't say that extreme heat is not covered by the warranty. Maybe the heat is what loosened the adhesive on the decal. I wonder how many Canon employees are members of DPC and read these messages? LOL!

You know, I was wondering if that was an intentional burn. The firefighters on one of the bases I was at had a building they got to burn. One realized it was a controlled burn and training activity when one saw the lawn chairs set up and the firefighters enjoying the show. :-)

The funny thing about the controlled burn was that our fire chief forgot to tell dispatch that we were burning. They got irate when they kept getting 911 calls about a building fire. Which we couldn't understand since we had two ambulances and four fire trucks parked in front of the place the whole time. *shrug*
