How is this for a plan? I'll be doing a long haul with Talj at the end of the year to Australia/New Zealand and want to take plenty of gear so am thinking of a medium Peli case (1510) to chuck in the hold and carry on the rest of my gear in a 'carry on board' friendly backpack. I really want to take my Sigma 300/2.8 buts its BIG, any frequent flyers suggest a better idea?

I have one of these, so I can carry a backpack PLUS this on, keep my stuff close to hand. The case then converts to a nifty trolley/cart to haul the other luggage that you did check. I also use the porter case as my only luggage on short business trips, too (and can tote co-workers' luggage on it if need be). Had it for years, watched a baggage handler at O'Hare toss it 15 feet onto the tarmac--scratched it up, but not broken--didn't have camera gear in it when I had to gate check it that time, thank goodness.

Does that mean you carry both on as hand luggage?

Whilst Andi has a problem with finding room for his big lenses I have a slightly different issue. I have to carry onboard ALL my medication for a month...that's a lot and they all have to be in their original packaging so that's going to take up a fair bit of room in my hand luggage. Add to that all the bits and pieces I have to carry about with me and some stuff to keep me entertained for over 24 hours and I can't see there being much room in my hand luggage for anything else :(

The thought of putting my camera gear in the hold is scary...I am going all that way and if they lose or damage the gear before I even get there I'd be gutted!

So, what would you do if you were me??

If you've already got a Peli 1510, I'd use that as the carryon for one of the two of you, the other taking the other stuff needed for the flight, and get a 2nd Peli for stuff going in the hold. I've used our 1510 as carryon for trans-atlantic, and the airline was OK with it (after some persuasion, given its weight & value).

Of course it depends on the airline
I have always managed to get on with more carry on than is noramlly allowed, and the thought of the camera in the hold is not one i easily entertain.
I am heading OS in a few months, and the Carry on will be two Laptops, plus my camera gear. (I am sure they will think I am a terrorist). None of it can go in the hold, so all goes on with me.
Have a really good read of their carry on allowances, and see what you can manage to get on board.

And, Have Fun down here in Aus

If you know where you'll be staying, why don't you ship the bulk of the stuff via a courier service (DHL, FedEx, etc.)? It should (actually) be there on time, insured, and for probably not much more than the airline will charge you for the bag.
