I got an email from a former bride - with her maiden name in parenthesis in the reply name field so I immediately knew who it was. Her email address (upon further inspection) is missing one letter...

The text of the email follows and the bad bad bad terrible english is a dead give away it's not from her at all (and I doubt she'd be in France).

I have no idea where the perps got my email and her name and email, and Expedia customer care is in the reply to field...

Am in a great sorrow writing you this note,Just wanted inform you about something very important,i could bearly thing straight at this point,i hope you come to my aid. Because something very terrible is happening to me now,i need a favor from you now,I had a trip here in Paris France.

Unfortunately for me all my money got stolen on my way to the hotel where i lodged along with my bag were my passport was ,And since then i have been without any money i am even owing the hotel here.

So i have limited access to emails for now, please i need you to lend me about 1800 Dollars so i can make arrangements and return back I am full of panic now,the police only asked me to write a state about the incident and directed me to the embassy,i have spoken to the embassy here but they are not responding to the matter effectively.
I will return the money back to you as soon as i get home, I am so confused right now.i wasn't injured because complied immediately. I will be waiting to hear from you since i can't access the internet always.

i await to hear from you.

And no, her name was not edited by me - it just wasn't there. She would never do that.

Wow that poor girl, thats just awful...

/reality

Its amazing what these people (for lack of a better word) do to try to extort money from others. The sad part is someone is bound to fall for this :(

You'd think that they would spring for the cost of a decent proofreader, but no. They are, indeed, idiots.

You should warn her of this -- a lot of malware accesses the address book on the target computer, which is probably how they got your address.

I saw a report on a similar thing using Facebook. Someone logs into your account, and won't let you back in, and proceeds to message your friends asking for money with the same type of story.
