Dont get me wrong, Im not complaining about my current score in the 1000th challenge, BUT, I was getting several comments about how much more potential my picture would have if it was properly processed. I looked at my picture, and thought all the people who said that must be crazy! Then I finally got my new monitor calibration hardware, plugged it in, and thought, "wow, my picture could be so much better with proper processing."
So, first, to all of you who I thought were crazy, though you dont know who you are, I appologize :).
Second, if your image looks good on your screen, but you get a comment or two that just seems "off" to you about your colors, etc., there may be a good reason for those comments.
Just thought I'd share. |

I think it can work against you also. I got a few comments on my 100 year old entry that it was oversaturated, but on the calibrated monitors I have at home and work, I think it looks fine. It is HDR, but even so, it looks like an orangey brown to me. It could just be a matter of perception and taste, though. If anyone would like to tell me if it seems oversaturated, and if they have a calibrated screen, I'd appreciate it.

well, :), to me, now that Im callibrated, yes, it looks a bit overaturated :). I obviously have to be careful as to not give away which image is mine, but taste on saturation definately isnt the issue. |

Looks oversaturated on my calibrated wide gamtu monitor - screen calibrated yesterday. Looks slightly less saturated on my normal gamut monitor, but still quite a sicky colour.. |

It's a wonderful idea,,but,,
This is an old issue and has been addressed in a hundred different ways here at DPC.
That said of course your right but I don't expect we'll ever have EVERYONE with a calibrated monitors. Also all the different brands monitors out there!!! Plus some of them are older.
I'm commenting here because in the current challenge some have said it's too dark and the other half claim it's too light!!!!
Maybe your thread will spur folks to get their montiors calibrated. It's so easy, free and only takes a few minutes.

Seems way over saturated on my calibrated monitor too. What's going on with your calibration? |

Could be a matter of taste... My monitor is also calibrated and it looks oversaturated.

I use a Huey Pro calibration setup (which I'm happy with) and this looks oversaturated to me. Mostly it's a problem with the windows and it may very well be true color given the sky and the reflection angle ... but it feels oversaturated. |

I would agree with Dr. Confuser. Its more of a 'feel' than anything else. Otherwise, there is no way to explain the huge number of over saturated landscapes and sunsets that tend to win ribbons around here.
I think, if you want the building in YoSpiff's image to appear stately, its over saturated. If you want it cartoonish, like I do, then its fine.
One thing that bugs me is people commenting on too dark or too light. If you vote, when you look at an image, you can look just below it to see the gray scales bars. If a long block looks white or black, rather than an even gradation with separate blocks, your monitor doesn't display the full range of tones. If there is too much white, your monitor it set too light. If there is too much black, you monitor is set too dark. Unfortunately, many monitors cannot show the entire gradation. The monitor I have at work, a run of the mill Dell, has the last two boxes black and the first two boxes white. Another monitor at work shows four at each end black and white. A third, has 4 boxes white and only the last box black(on this monitor, some images can appear washed out). Images appear differently on each monitor and I rely on my home monitor if I have a question in voting. I check images I submit on the work monitors to see what they will look like under less than optimal conditions. |

I guess the best way to tell is to put it on some other peoples computers, with me there, and ask them. I'm leaning toward thinking I just overdid it. |

I apologise for voting on this school computer with its iffy calibration ... but teaching for me has ended for the school year, and all I've got to do is hang around in the staff room. ;-) |

looks way over saturated, also a halo effect can easily be seen upper right hand corner, there also a complete mismatch of blue sky in the upper left side.

Calibration was a huge issue for my 1000 challenge entry. I think I mucked up this time around though. It looks fine on my monitor but everywhere else I checked it looked pale and washed out.. I definitely need to get re-calibrated..
Hah! I refuse to vote on my uni monitors because they make ribbon winners look like something I would give a three to.
