Whats the longest E-TTL cable I can purchase for Canon system - I know some people have rigged their own ones out of network cables etc, but I am looking for an off-the-shelf cable that is more than a metre long. Ideally it wont be a curly one either.

Cheers!

The curly ones do stretch out to just about a metre I have seen some rather dodgy looking thin cheapo ones that are about a metre also (ebay from china) I would always advise getting the better build though Simmo. Radio triggers not an option?

I was afraid of that - why dont they make them longer?

Are radio triggers ETTL?

Assuming you are using a canon flash I've used the infra red canon remote at about 20m. I've been fairly pleased with it's usefulness as I've seen lots of people say they are rubbish and like you I wanted the ETTL and as far as I could see radio triggers don't provide that, it seems pretty good at not needing direct line of sight, I used it for this shot where the flash was on a small stand behind Hazel so there was no line of sight at all and it fired perfectly evey time ... though it's not the cheapest bit of kit :(

Hmm, look good but pricey.. anyone in the UK managed to get hold of them?

RP's or the newer PocketWizards would do it at a price but....

Try this if you just want longer with some cat5 cable and a bit of do it yourself... The procedure on the off shoe cable is fatal though :-)

Once you're up in the radio transmitters is it not a better option to go for the Canon ST-E2 if you're just planning to use it with Speedlights? It's only £150 compared to probably double that for a set of Radio transmitter/reciever.

I could understand if you wanted to use it for triggering studio flash wirelessly but for just off camera speedlight the Canon system would fully integrate into the groups/ratio ettl speedlights.

the ST-E2 still works on IR though doesnt it? So if I was outside and I didnt have a line of sight to the slave, it wouldnt fire..

This Flashwave was suggested by a fellow student in a recent flash class.
I haven't had a chance to research it yet. They liked it and said it was cheaper and more versatile than Canon.

Yes that's true but I would have thought in most situations it would work just fine. I've never used one but I assumed it would work as well as using a 580EXII on camera as a master, which I have done a fair amount of with no problems.

But like I say it's assumptions as I've not used it.

There are plenty of good options for firing flashes set on Manual but I would think it's going to stuggle to keep ettl on slaves fired via radio? Again I may be wrong :0)

The ST-E2 is pretty much a useless piece of equipment for remote flash use. DIRECT line of site is required or tight spaces where lots of bouncing can occur. The best thing about it is the focus assist beam without the heavy flash on top.

I just saw THESE over at //www.FlashZebra.com , look like a nice alternative if you don't need to be too far from the flash...
