Guys,
Now that this lens is a reality, I want to know what you think about it, if you ever owned/used it. I see it going for $600+... and photozone.de give it 4 stars for optical quality.
Would you recommend this lens at this price? I would be looking to replace my kit lens (18-105mm) sometime in near future. |

| Hi Prash, I'm no Nikon expert, but I did get the 16-85 to go with my D80 and like it very much. That said, it is still a consumer zoom and from what I've read not that much of an upgrade over the 18-105. Had the 18-105 been out at the time, I may have gone that route with a sigma 10-20 for wider. The question really is what do you expect from replacing you 18-105? |

I am seeking more edge to edge sharpness at wide angles. Is it unreasonable to expect with 16-85mmVR?

I'm not an expert, but I would think if you want edge to edge sharpness, you'd be better off purchasing a fixed focal length prime lens. You'll always have some compromise with a zoom, though they are a lot better now.
I am in search of the best zoom in a similar range. Haven't made a decision yet.

I agree that a fixed prime might be my best bet for optical quality. Lets say one wants something in between the kit lens and the tack-sharp primes, is 16-85 one of them? |

Sharpness is good, but, it is still a consumer zoom so probably not much different from what you have. Here are a couple at 16mm from my portfolio. They've both been resized and cropped a little so don't know how much value they have for you.
16mm, f3.5, 1/1600, iso100
16mm, f8, 1/15, iso800
