So I got killed on the On the Edge Challenge. From some of the comments I was wondering if this shot would have done better.
Just as an additional note, the one I did enter I thought would be better bc it showed all his stuff. I wanted to show that all his belongings were with him outside. I wanted to emphasize this in the shot. Maybe I coulda done this with the above shot. What do you think?

Personally I liked your submission a bit better, more context. You really didn't do badly at all at 5.7. I think what hurt most is the harsh flash, something which you don't have alot of control of. Using the on-camera flash straight on will always give that harsh "hard light" look, which most of the time is a major detractor.
Other than an investment in an off-camera flash, there is no easy remedy that I know of. Your only other option would have been to shoot on a tripod w/o flash (long exposure). Difficult with a live subject.
