...to enable liveview on a Nikon D300? :-)

I just came back from the local Ritz store. Three guys (including two salesmen and myself) spent about 15 minutes trying to figure out how to enable liveview on a D300 demo unit, but we couldnt. One of them shoots in film, so he was out right away. The other one was enthu like me to make it work, but was reluctant in reading its manual. I went into the shooting ment, then switched between tripod/handheld modes several times, then came out of the menu, and hit the shutter button once. Nothing. Then tried the AF-On button, the OK button, still nothing.

After a while we realised there was no CF card in the camera. Could that be the reason?

Sorry about the stupid blabber.. but I am still baffled... why did the liveview not come up? How do you do it guys (D300 owners)?? I saw this video (check around 3:18 on the timeline), didnt help much.

Any ideas?

Sorry - I have never used live view on mine. The manual walks you through it, you have to raise the mirror and use AF-On (the two tricks apparently):

1. Frame a picture in the viewfinder and focus
2. Raise mirror and display view through lens in monitor
3. Press + button to zoom in and focus, make sure AF-On is on because the half shutter compression will not focus in Tripod LV mode.
4. Take pictures

Ok I got the answer here. Check at time 0:57 on the timeline.. the author mentions switching the dial on top left to liveview sign. I tried doing the same in store, but this dial was jammed for some reason.. it just wont move. How strange! I will go there again tomorrow and try.

There is a small black button that locks this dial as well. You must first depress the button, then, while holding that down, rotate the release mode dial. If what I'm saying doesn't ring a bell, consult the diagrams on pages 3 and 4 (which is pages 29 and 30 in Acrobat) of the manual. Here is the online version of the manual.

Aahh!! I will try that tomorrow.

In all honesty, holding the D300 down was the easy part.. but it did make me feel like I am coming from a P&S...tho D90 is close to a P&S with its user friendly buttons etc. Heck it has a LV button dedicated to live view;-)

It felt like a tank though (the D300). Nice grip!

Honestly, I find "scene modes" infinitely more confusing and troublesome. For me, it's easier to think about the consequences of ISO,Aperture and Shutter changes in relation to the subject than to remember exactly how every single mode is set. Damn scene modes on my 770SW drive me insane....
I wasn't too impressed with the Lv, but I can see it's use in macro or when you are shooting non-moving objects. I'm not sure if the D90 functions the same with regard to Lv. Although the D300 is hefty, I think it fits my hands very nicely, like you said. The 51 point 3-D AF tracking is pretty rad too.
Also, here's a good picture of the little button I'm talking about. Just to the left of the QUAL button. D300 Controls picture
