A helicopter that brings workers from here to the offshore oil rigs crashed this morning in the frigid Atlantic Ocean....high winds and high waves. One person has been rescued and brought to the hospital, there were 18 on the helicopter. My sister just emailed me and said that the husband of one of her closest friends (they went to school together and were bridesmaids at each others weddings) was on the chopper (he is a nurse and works on the rigs).
There was just a news conference and the head of the company confirmed that 1 person has been rescued but did not say anything about the other 17. Of course there are rumours that everyone else is fine and coming to shore on a ship, and then other people are saying that there are no more survivors. But if everyone sruvived wouldn't the company say so? It doesn't look good.

Yes, local news is reporting that as well.....2 people spotted in the water and life rafts, but apparently the life rafts deploy automatically and no one is saying if there were people in the life rafts or not. |

Hoping for the best for all of them.
The company won't confirm any status until they know without a doubt. The worst thing they could do is get everyone's hopes up by saying something wrong. If I remember right, that happened in the minning accident in West Vigina a few years ago? |

Tragic new developments
It appears likely that most didn't get out of the chopper at all :(
I guess if there's any consolation at all, at least now they'll know...
Oh man, I can't even begin to imagine what they're going through :(
"Here is a partial list of names of the 17 people who are presumed dead in Thursday's helicopter crash off Newfoundland and Labrador as released by the RCMP. Only one person has been confirmed dead by the RCMP:

2 more names were released today:
32 year old Corey Eddy of Paradise, NL
41 year old John Pelley of Deer Lake, NL
John was my sister's friend, he was 1 year behind me in high school, he married one of my sister's best friends, she was a bridesmaid at their wedding, they were very close. John's wife, brother and mother are all here in the city waiting and hoping that his body will be recovered from the crash, at least they will get some sort of closure.
One body was recovered today by a remote underwater vehicle, they are hoping to recover more.
We went to a concert last night (Great Big Sea) and they did a tribute to those who were lost, it was touching. The entire province is grieving along with the families, we're a small province and it seems everyone knows someone who was affected by this tragedy. |

One the one hand I am glad they found the bodies because that can help provide closure, but on the other, it is sad because that means there is no more hope that their loved ones may be alive.
:( My deepest sympathies from the mountains of NC. |
