I completely changed my pricing structure in 2009 to get away from sitting fees and packages. I won't hijack your thread by telling you all of my thoughts on pricing, but I did post my prices online if you want to do a comparison. I would say you are offering your customers a very good deal as your price is lower than mine and I know my price is lower than most of the photographers in my market (ignoring department stores and portrait mills).

One thing I forgot to mention on my site, I do provide web sized images for posting on facebook or myspace. There is some risk that people will try to print them, but I'm clear about the copyright when setting up the project and I try to avoid customer that are clearly looking for bargains.

David it's my thread and we can take it where ever it goes,
Look I'm interested in the shots you have in your port, under seniors. Are any of them shot inside or are they all shot outside?

Lol, when I saw the thread title I thought you were referring to discounts for old folks. Guess that's what comes of living in a city with a large retirement population!
(and a country that doesn't make quite as big a deal out of school photos :) )

Ya... I've bumped into that problem a couple of times. But "High School Seniors" always takes up so much space on a web site...

Not sure which port you were looking at, I have too many these days. The Seniors gallery here has two indoor shots. I haven't really found my light in the studio yet, but I have 2008 work to post yet that is an improvement over what's up there now.

I'm just getting into this, but a school wanted me to donate a package so I gave them the following:

2-4 Hour shoot with your student
Multiple clothing changes & locations, if desired
1 11x14 image
1 8x10 image
16 wallets
20 page Memory Mate book

and priced it at $350. It seems to be about what LifeTouch charges, but they do a much shorter session. However, they do seem to have things pretty well wrapped up here.

I like the graduation invitation ideas, but I'm not sure that the school doesn't already have their own.

That's not a bad price at all on my site my price is $349 but trying to get some more business so I can buy some new glass I decided to undercut the going rate by about $200. And that's the cheap guys... We have a company here that starts their senior packages at $1500 and goes up to about $3200. I just can't see paying that much for pictures. Granted they are all indoors and the shots are awesome but WHOOOO what a rip off.

Well...
session fee - what your session is is up to you. I do a 90 minute studio/yard for $70, a 3 hour studio and location for $115 (was $79 and 2 hours but I never kept it to 2 hours). THe highest priced photog in the county gets $125 for studio/yard session, 3 outfits. I don't limit outfits. (sales reasons - more outfits means more poses they need to buy, and it's something i offer that my competition does not)

packages - what is the MINUMUM you want to work for? That's what you smallest package should be.
How long (hours) does it take to shoot, edit, meet and greet, proof, edit, sell, deliver, etc that package? I tend to spend 6 to 8 hours overall on a senior and want $75 for every one of those hours. So my packages need to be 450 to 600 PLUS the product cost at a minimum. If they can spend $350 some will...and I can't spend 6 hours for a $350 sale and make a living.

Control poses. That's what they want, so that's what your charge for (and in theory that's where the editing time is spent).

I like to give wallets like mad. they give them away, spread the word about me. other photogs sell wallets seperately.

The photog I mentioned above - he did 200 seniors last year at just about $1050 each. His package is $650 and it's ONE pose. Want more poses? $40 each OR you can buy a 7 pose frame frame for $350. TaDa - $1000. Wallets are NOT in the package. Works for him, but I can't stand one-pose pacakges. My personal feeling is it's bordering on a scam. But then I shoot a lot of images and show a lot - 80 is about normal, but i've shown as many as 150 (some kids are into a LOT of things!) I'd like to show 60-80.

Since I know I show a lot I have packages designed to sell that many. My top two packages are based around CTB (coffee table books) and run $995/895. They get 10/8 poses respectively and 22 wallets fo every pose - so for that $1000 they get 220 wallets, 10 8x10s, the book and their choice of a few other things and a 16x20 canvas. I don't expect to sell many $1000 packages of course, but it does make the $895 package look like a better deal. The first senior of the year to see the new pricing spent....(drumroll) $895 (plus the session fee of $80). My average last year, including the session fee was $596. I want that up $100 at least this year. and I fully believe I'll get it (i've got a new studio, new samples, fewer wallets per package, more bonus items, more reps, etc)

Another big studio around here did 300 seniors last year, one did 75 and the other one that does a lot I don't know, and then there are 4 or so like me that work from a home based studio.

Lifetouch is the Evil Empire. Largest photography company in the US. They do tons of school yearbook type work and will lose money in an area until the competiion is bankrupt, then raise prices and bend the school/parents over a barrel. Not very ethical of course, but sine 95% of their competiion is mom and pop businesses who can fight them? It's like fighting walmart.
