I am trying to pick out some photos for this year's San Diego County Fair. They get thousands of entries so starting last year I tried to hedge my bet and improve my odds by mostly using the Black and White categories because they attract fewer entries. Must have worked since I did get one first place ribbon. Everybody has reacted very well to a version of this photo which got me a yellow ribbon earlier this year. Here is a re-done version- sized to the proportions of the print I will enter which will be 11x 14, matted to 16x 20. I think the warm tones are part of what help the picture's appeal but I am wondering if it would be considered monochromatic enough to be considered black and white. The only guidence they give is to say that sepia and selium tinted images would be considered black and white. If you enter the wrong category they simply reject the picture and do not put it into a proper category. Thank you for any input and suggestions.

Just my opinion, but I would say no. The surf boards have two much color in them. If I were to see it in a b&w contest, I would think it was misclassified. |

I agree--clearly a color shot. Sepia can be applied to b/w conversions, so that is probably what they meant. |

I'll register a unanimous third opinion. It's a color shot. If you want this warm look, first convert it to grays, and then apply toning. |

Thanks for the feedback. You are probably all right- especially since you all agree! hehe. It looks OK but in my opinion not quite as nice in BW- even tinted (at least in the versions I have tried) but I do have some other candidates for entries as well. They allow up to ten- I usually do about five.
Others probably going to be used (entries don't officially open for at least another week)
Color- Sports (not a huge category) Movement of The Masses
BW Scenic- Water and Sand Textures
BW Scenic- Girl with Bucket
BW Scenic- Cactus Prayer
Some don't look as nice here. The colors are not as good on the marathon runners and the staircase looks even more red. Girl with bucket is not as sharp as the full size version.
Probably have to order prints and see which look best. My monitor is calibrated.
BW Architecture (too much color on this?- could just get a BW print made from it- what do you think?)
BW Nature
A variety of entries.

Original posted shot is a color shot, not B/W; it will be rejected. D\itto the architecture shot. Cactus Prayer is killa nice. I'd try to crop it a little less symmetrically, but it's very nice.

I like both Cactus Prayer and the sea/sand shot. Depending on you audience and your competition one might do better than the other. The sea sand shot might be more "accessible" to a general viewer, but if they are likely to see several such shots in the comp then it might get lost among them. The cactus shot is more unique for sure :-) |
