One of these days, I hope to have some pictures hanging in local galleries, and I think one thing I need for that is a little "real-world" success. I've recently had a little, so I thought I'd share a little of my happiness.
A week or so ago I found out I won the Parks and Trails NY photo contest with this shot that I took at the 2007 Ithaca DPC get together:
I've won some non-DPC contests before, but this was my first "non-web-site" affiliated one!
Yesterday, I went to take some publicity shots for it and accept my prize (a gift certificate). I brought a prop (a canvas version of the shot which is very beautiful) and we took the award shots with that for PTNY newsletter. (Unfortunately, no one thought to invite the real press, so very limited publicity for me).
Thanks here to Gary ( eqsite) for helping me write the description of the trail I was on! I was just going with the group, so I didn't know exactly how we got there. And to all the Ithaca people for organizing it! (I also gave DPChallenge a plug in my write up!)
Also, I got a some additional little recognition: In the fall I had some photos accepted for display in a choreographed slide show with the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra, called "Hidden Gems: Mohawk Valley Vistas" ("Nationally-acclaimed photochoreographer James Westwater"). A few weeks ago I got a call to give them permission to use the shots on the Schenectady Bicentennial website. They were also supposed to be in the special insert in the local paper but there weren't a lot of pictures in it (only two Niskayuna shots), and mine weren't included. But I already got an inquiry about prints from someone who saw the website, so I'm happy about that if I get some traffic.
You will recognize many of my shots on the Schenectady Bicentennial site, as I think all but one have been in DPC challenges. So kudos also to DPC!
Now to figure out how to turn some of that good fortune into local gallery representation!

Can't view the photo as I am at work right now, but if it anything like those images you took at the GTG in upper state NY then I am not surprised it fared so well.
Congratulations to you Neil, and here is hoping your talents are duly recognized by the masses.

Way to go, Neil. I somehow missed this thread. The print looks great in the photo -- it must be fantastic in real life. What LL Bean was the shot taken it? Was it at HQ in Freeport? |
