In the recently-ended "Self Portrait Without People", I decided to enter a highly abstract image that was more or less an extension of my much acclaimed/derided original DPC self portrait-as-raindrop:

2005:

2009:

This year's image *scored* better, but attracted a whole LOT less attention, LOL...

Anyway... The point is, for the whole week I was working on variations of the following:

I have an idle sense of curiosity as to whether people are amused by this take on an animal making music, and whether it'd have fared better score-wise. I'm happy that I remained consistent and entered "Visionary", however...

The toy photo probably would have scored better on DPC as a whole, but if you ask me, your entry is much better from both a technical and storytelling perspective.

Hi Bear! I like "the Visionary" very much, even better than your 2005 entry. For me, the monkey image does less than nothing; I can't find anything in it to find interesting or telling about you (what am I missing?). I never got to your entry in this challenge, but I probably would have given the Visionary at least 3 points more than the monkey.

edit to add: I'm not a great predictor of how things do here, however

LOL...

NONE of us can predict, and anyway I entered what I wanted to enter. It's just that a bunch of people thought the monkeyshot was "cute". But they weren't DPCers.

As to its self-portrait relevance, well... "bear_music" = an animal making music, and the cymbalic monkey is poised at the edge of my marsh, which is where I make my visual music, so....

The title would have been "Cymbalic Slef Portrait" btw :-)

I prefer the monkey picture - its bright, fun and love how it relates to your username. I also really like your 2005 entry.

Visionary is good but for me not as great as the other 2. But then it possibly represents you better than a musical monkey ; )

The visionary is one of the photos I most remembered from the Self Portrait challenge. I really liked its simplicity, and especially how it was not literal.... using glass cups arranged like owl's eyes is, in my opinion, a very visionary way of photographing "visionary" (I hope I am making sense... I dont always).

I really love the image, and hope that your score doesnt take anything away from how you feel about the image either.

Edit: The monkey shot would have done nothing for me at all. Its a more literal interpretation of the challenge, but there is nothing groundbreaking about it.

Nah, the scores never impact how I feel about the images any more. They DO impact how I feel about the freakin' *voters*, though :-)
