Hi All,
Well would love to have some feedback on why this one suffered so badly even after the validation message went up, it did climb from 4.8 at validation and around 80 votes to the current score but I did expect more from it if the truth be told. It was an awfully hard job to pull off in basic editing and I suspect a lot of people didn't believe it to be a valid entry (especially the first 80 voters) kind of ironic that smoe members break the rules by voting low on an image that they believe to be breaking the rules I think ;)
Hours went in to positioning the lights, adding makeup / facepaint to darken certain parts of my face and as it was a self portrait and I had no family available on the day to help I had to use mirrors to check I was positioned correctly.
So basically asking for comments here or on the image as to what caused it to bomb so badly :)
Thanks
EDIT Oh the image was this one:

Hi Mark,
I had no doubt about it's legality, but I gave it a 5 - sorry. On second thought that was a bit rough, but the image (although undoubtedly taking a lot of skill to achieve) is quite soft, and the lighting is very harsh. I think that the softness of the image is what hurt you, not any doubts about validity. Super sharp, clean images do well here, and this one isn't.
Hope that helps.
ETA actually looking at the comments maybe people were docking you on suspicion of rule violation, but that's not what I was thinking.

Thanks Lonni,
Not quite sure I understand the soft comment at all but that's fine :)
The lighting wasn't harsh really harsh at all, but in pumping the contrasts in the necessary way to achieve the split in the face it created the impression of harsh light so I understand where you are coming from, the basic editing rules are what made it necessary to do this had it been advanced I could have dodged and burned the areas as required and had an amazing image... I guess I was hoping people would realise just how hard this sort of shot is in basic editing conditions ;) Try it for yourself heh it isn't fun LOL
Thanks again for taking the time to comment though (and 5 is perfectably acceptable by the way, it was the HUGE amounts of 1, 2, 3 and 4 votes that killed my score, not that 4 was unacceptable it's just the amount of them heh).
Mark

Effort/setup time doesn't count for much in scoring around here usually. This shot has also been done here a couple of times before - may have had some "been there, done that" vibes. |

Heh thanks Barry, I know it has been done once before by Alex but that was in advanced, I don't think a "Been there, done that" vibe really comes in to effect here though, especially when you see the hundreds of bloody water drops that get entered time and time again... Maybe you are right though, I guess I should start voting all the shots I have seen before with a 1 or 2 vote ;) No of course I wont do that but sometimes, just sometimes ... heh

Yeah, you're probably right now that I think about it. |
