Anyone seen that Nikon TV advertisement where a guy tries to cheer a girl up with photo's of non-human and non-animal smiles?
Like a mailbox, a birdhouse, a sign, a clock, a building with windows and doors and stuff like that. As long as you can see a smile in the stuff that makes up the object.
A challenge like that demands a good looking around and good composition. I'd make it an open challenge, no messing around with objects in PS. :)
I really liked that advertisement, but find it hard to make a clear description of what I mean and I can't find any samples. Or would it be to difficult?
edit: and no puppets, dolls, muppets and stuff like that. Just compose a smile.

Sander, I think this is a great idea for either an open or member challenge. I don't think it is too difficult. Althought I haven't seen the commerccial, I think I know exactly what you mean.

I have a set of 5-pin bowling balls. One of them has a swirl pattern that looks like a smiley |

You mean like the frontend of some cars? Especially Japanese ones.

I think this could be really neat and fun...Some houses even have faces. |

This would be somewhat similar to the challenges involving a letter or a number as the subject. |

FYI: this was suggested in this thread and has already been added to the database of challenge ideas, although with a very weak "details" section.
I've never seen the commercial (I have ReplayTV) and I'm not quite sure I "get it"... it sounds difficult to describe. |

That's the same 'idea' yes, referencing to the same commercial.
Perhaps it hasn't been on the US networks. Kinks, Konador and me live in Europe and I think I've only seen it on European channels like Eurosport, Discovery and/or the European NGC.
It is very difficult to describe. Faidoi's example is going into the right direction, but not exactly what is meant. I couldn't find anything in the dpc galleries (that's a good sign to try this challenge perhaps) and during a two hour walk today I couldn't find a good example either.
Here two quick shots I just did in the house to illustrate this idea:
These are just two sloppy quick ISO1600 low light no attention to composition or anything examples. The first one is a light switch and the second is a Philips clockradio that wakes you with the sound of a male chicken. Does this help?
The examples from the commercial are much better and top 10 quality. :)
An alternative could be a portraiture challenge where the aim is to make portraits of smiling people.

I suggested something like this a few months ago, too. Here's the link I used as an example: //www.malaran.com/2.0/faces/face.html

pitsaman: 1, doesn't fit the challenge -- you didn't read the challenge details. |
