With 3 challenges having wolves ribbon at the moment I thought I would let folks know that the US gov't is planning to de-list wolves as threatened in yellowstone and northern rockies areas. In just a few weeks almost 1,000 wolves in these regions could be killed. This is tragic news for the wolves. And the ecology of these regions.
Each species plays an intrinsic and vital role in the ecosystem.
For more info and a chance to potentially stop this decision...

Thats great didn't they do this before? Hunting them till near extinction the figure out they screwed up and the wolves played a very important role in the ecosystem, fund programs to reintroduce wolves to the area and after they finally start balancing out everything hunt them down and kill them again... f***** morons

If I'm not mistaken some of the wolves in Yellowstone were transplanted from Canada to help grow the population again.

Next: increase in population of coyotes so they will have to do something about that.
Then: increase in population of rabbits/hares and other such creatures so they will have to do something about that

and so on and so on and so on

Are the wolves over populated now in the region? I don't think so. The population just doesn't warrant them to be classified as endangered any more.

Yeah.... they have done it before, they do not learn quickly...
and no they are not overpopulated as far as I know.
I think hunters just have a strong lobby force in washington.

As do those opposed.

I'm glad to see that problems some adjoining ranchers have with livestock are being addressed. I think that was a likely flashpoint previously.

The issue with livestock would probably be related to over hunting of the wolves normal prey.

Right, it isn't the hunters, it's the ranchers. And IMO the ranchers are scapegoating the wolves, but that's another story...

I just wish we could find a way to accept the 'wild things' the wolves, the bears, the bees, and bugs.
Our fate is so interconnected with theirs. We are so quick to destroy and kill that which is different from us that does not work exactly like we do.
There are simple ways that ranchers can keep wolves at bay. And even if they lose livestock to wolves I think we have to re-evaluate every time that money is the bottom line.
When all the wild things and places are gone and we have money from our trees and critters death and we have no beauty or fresh air and nothing that can make our heart race with wonder, what do we really have?

It is indeed sad that many people seek the extermination of wolves based solely on their misconceptions of this beautiful animal.

In these parts, people will trek out to Algonquin Park and participate in a Wolf Howl Canoe Trip. Wolf Howl Canoe Trip. If you ever get the opportunity to experience something like this, DO IT... it is truly a wonderful experience.

Considering that my father was a trapper, and bearing in mind the fact that I have lived in some very remote areas of this country... I guess I don't harbour a lot of the fears most people have about wolves.
