hi, I have some pics I want to crop to 4x6 so the printers will properly print the full pic...

this wasn't really a problem with my D50, but with my D90, the filez are huge so my method has become obviously VERY WRONG...

I just choose crop, select 4x6 and crop away... BUT, my D90 filez are 14.3 x 9.5 inches... so I am downgrading the hell out of my pics by doing that... I'm getting some large posters done today so I need as large of a file as I can get,,,

should I do it the same way, but will in the two boxes to be 14.25 x 9.5 at 300 dpi???

is that the best way to do it???

let me know, as I am editing the pics right as we speak and heading to the printers in like 20 min... thanks everyone =P

Your native proportion is 4x6. So use the crop tool to draw a crop over the entire image (no crop). Now grab a corner and hold down the shift key while dragging: the ratio will be maintained as the crop gets smaller. When you have it roughly right, release the corner and place cursor in center of cropped-to area and you can drag the crop around to position it.

As long as you hold down shift as you drag a corner, the ratio you have established will remain the same.

Also, if you want the DPI to stay at 300 (although with poster size you likley do not need it that high) use the resize tool and set it to the DPI you want and the size of the poster. PS does a pretty good job of resizing at a quality level good enough to print pretty large unless you have cropped your file down really far. I'd say you can easily double the length and width and still get a decent file to print. Sharpen after the resize is done for your print output.
