Since I'm going through a major "renovation" during the recovery from hardware failure, I'm considering making some changes to my organizational structure.
Previously, I had one Lightroom catalog. It contained all my photos for about the last 1 1/2 years. I'm thinking about switching to a multiple catalog format.
How do you use Lightroom Catalogs? One big catalog? Many small ones? One Catalog per year / quarter / month?
Thanks for your input! |

| I keep one catalogue for each year. Keeps Lightroom running smooth and my folder list doesn't get ridiculously huge. |

I use a different catalogue for each different subject. Only takes 2 seconds to load up a different catalogue and much easier to organise. The only continuous catalogue I use is a miscellaneous one which I use to process just random shots from here and there!

I have two catalogs, one for personal work, and one for commercial work.

on a similar point, can you run Lightroom 2 alongside lightroom 1?
I don't want to transfer my large lightroom catalog over to lightroom 2 when i install it, but would prefer to use lightroom 2 as i can use the raws from my 5d mk2
thanks

BL (Before Lightroom) I organized everything in a directory structure year/(wedding or senior or portrait or misc)/client_name.
I switched to LR last August or so and did one catalog and found as it got full it bogged down. So for '09 I have wedding, senior, portrait, sports catalogs and may add more as needed, then i have a three ring binder with a section for each catalog and a list of who/what is in each catalog, and whether the culls have been deleted and the good ones backed up.
