As some of you may know already I am new to DSLR photography and DPC, so I would like some help. Please critique my photo and help me understand the score I received. I thought I should have done better but I am a newb trying to learn, so I would like to know if most thought it was a DNMC situation or if it was the technicals of the photo. I thought this is one of the best shots I have taken so for but it just may be me thinking that I am doing better than I really am. So please help a fella out.

Thanks a lot guys and gals

I gave it a 5. I understood what you were pointing out, and though it was slightly puzzling, it was not a serious curiosity for me. Mostly, though, I found it an average floral shot. Nothing really seemed to stand out from it. Perhaps the yellow flowers had too much green cast to really stand out. There was not a lot of detail coming through either. A closer shot, showing off the details of that one flower might have had more impact on me. Also, I am not a huge fan of floral shots, so ti has to be really well done to grab my attention. I'm not a big fan of square crops either. I only do them on my own shots when it is the only composition that works for an image.

one - i think the idea of 'puzzling in nature' terminology a bit off the beaten path. there are a number of ways to read that line, but in this case, given the rest of the challenge description i think the 'nature' aspect was a stretch. ie: take a photo of a puzzle or something puzzling in nature ( nature not being the natural world, but that the general aspect would be puzzling ). FWIW - there was one pretty good photo of a pelican on a pier entered - i mentioned the photo was good, but the only thing puzzling about it was the title. i'm guessing that photog took the theme in the same sense you did.

two - the photo - outside of the challenge - is so-so. your subject is almost centered, with the white highlights being overexposed. the yellow has a pretty obvious green tint to it. there is a lot of 'junk' surrounding your subject that distracts. i might have cropped it vertically with the subject flower falling on the lower left hand area of the crop. that would still show the subject flower with it's yellow counterparts, but eliminated a lot of the distracting elements.

three - even though you may have thought it puzzling in one way or another, i'm having a hard time being puzzled by it.

four - the border is terrible.

harsh - but to the point - i guess. take it or leave it :)

The following comment on your photo was uncalled for and quite inappropriate I feel.

"Joey Harrison says that he could take a better picture with boxing gloves on !"

Not to mention mysterious to those of us who don't know who Joey Harrison is.

Thingfish might want to edit their comment to make the notation of the quoted comment anonymous...

I see you have already grown the thick skin needed to thrive here. (Evolution in action.)

Didn't vote on the challenge, but in my opinion this is a total shoe horn entry. Without the title, the connection would never be made. Nice shot though.
