Hey Wendy that sucks. I am no computer geek. However, I always use the save as, plus name change or file type change. I have had several images checked recently with no problems. Are you sure this is the reason as I too have a good score running and used the save as function after messing with the original? Arrrgh!

Yup, I'm sure. I played around with it for about 3 hours when I got the message that it wasn't the original. If you are using photoshop elements, and add an adjustment layer, or something that turns it from a jpg to a photoshop file type, even if you do a Save As, it adds photoshops metadata file information into the header of the original. The bizarre thing is it keeps the modified date the same as the original download time, but it changes the creation date and has the photoshop header in the code. My husband brought the file into LINUX and looked at the code to see this. Sometimes Elements did this on a Save As on strictly jpg changes as well, but most of the time it didn't. It is not something that I will ever trust again. From now on, the files are dragged directly from the card reader to my extra drive, and then taken off the card reader again and brought into photoshop.

Wendy, that sucks. Unfortunately even if you use "save as" you are copying over the original unless you change the name of the file.

Oh Wendy, I'm so disappointed for you. It would have been a PB for you for a long way - you must be crushed!
Don't let it discourage you though - you got a high six once, you can do it again! |

That's the stupid thing about it--I did a Save As, I gave the file a new name, but it appends the photoshop header to the original file. I'm using Elements 6, and my husband figured I did something stupid, and accidentally saved without remembering. Wasn't the case. We worked for 3 hours that night trying to figure out what happened. Because I have photoshop automatically save it with a new name (name + edited 1, name + edited 2, etc.) We proved that elements will in fact change the original, even if you do a Save As with a new name. It doesn't change the modified date--as far as it is concerned, the file hasn't been modified. But it does change the creation date, and it does add the photoshop metadata header into the code. So now you have a creation date after the modification date, and it says that it has been modified by photoshop elements.
I wanted to put comments on the picture to explain what happened and to explain the white background (which is why I assume it was challenged), but the photo is gone. Is it put back up after the challenge? In other challenges, it shows which photos have been dq'd...
edited to add: Thanks for the encouragement, Lonni, I was crushed, because I thought I had done everything right, and I really loved the shot. I'm getting over it, but I'm scared to death of the picture I entered tonight (in light on white). Did the copying the file directly work the way it was supposed to? Did I do the editing right? and so on--which is funny, because this one won't do nearly as well. I don't even know if this one will hit my usual average.
Ah well, live and learn!

I'm scared to death of validations in general. I know that the rules need to be strict to protect the process, but I'm always terrified that I've accidently done something wrong! |

I have been using PS and also PS elements for many years and have never seen that happen. What is your process for getting the photo from the camera onto your computer? I suspect that might be where your problem lies. If you use any batch import commands it will write to your file.(some programs have a command available to take the photos off the camera and put them in a folder of your choice..but since it is done through a program it adds exif to the file) The only safe way to do it is to actually open the folder on your card and copy the contents, and then paste them into a new folder on the computer.

It has disappeared because it is no longer available for voting. I think you will find that it will pop back up again after voting is over, then you can add your explanation. :)

that's the strange thing--I figured that many people are using elements, yet I hadn't heard of this. I use organizer to get the photos directly from the card. We did many trials after the fact to see what changed and what didn't. The organizer didn't change anything. My other theory is that I'm telling it to save in a version set, so that it automatically renames the file each time. When I thought about it, it seemed to make sense that when you told it to save a version set that it would tag the original as well. But when we were doing trials to see what happened, even removing that didn't make a difference. I was able to reproduce the problem with new files though. I just wanted to let people know to not trust Photoshops save as, and that, as you mentioned, just move the files over and make a copy.
thanks for your input on things. Good luck with your score! (and congrats on your calendar entry) |

vawendy, sorry about your DQ. Do you shoot RAW? Except for Minimal Editing challenges (which must be shot in JPG) I always shoot RAW for challenges, if only to be sure I can't possible alter my original! |

Score has very much stagnated and is not very impressive but I have 7 lovely comments which is very encouraging considering I went for an 'alternative' shot on this one. Thanks, P.

PS - Also really sorry to read about your DQ, I could almost sense your excitement about how well your pic was doing. It must be a real blow but console yourself with the fact you've done it once you can do it again! All the best.

You have commented on 25 images (13%) in this challenge.

Basically, I commented all the bads and some goods. I believe it is important to tell why you don't like a photo and give some advice as to how you score it better. |

Sorry folks. I was mistaken. That score is for my Free Study entry. I had two entries displayed on the home page and I confused one with the other.
My Action submission ended up at 5.817.
