so i am looking to buy a fast wide angle prime in the near future. currently i use a canon XSI with a canon 28-135mm and a canon 50mm 1.4.
canons options for me are slim seeing as the 24mm 1.4L, 14mm 2.8L, 35mm 1.4L, and 15mm fisheye are pretty expensive for me ( im a college student haha).

sooo some of the lenses i HAVE been looking at are: Sigma 20mm f1.8 ( looking like my favorite at the moment), Sigma 24mm and 28mm 1.8's, canon 35mm f2.0 (egh), canon 28mm f1.8, canon 24mm f2.8 (too slow), canon 20mm f2.8 (too slow), sigma 30mm f1.4.

ideally id like something wider than 30mm and f2.0 or bigger at its widest (although if the optics on a 2.8 are ridiculous i would consider it). i know that leaves me very few options but it would be quite an asset to have for me. any opinions, remarks, comments welcome :)

ps: i have also been eyeing the canon 17-40L but i already know thats a fantastic lens (i dont need to ask other people, so comments on my other options would be much more appreciated)

I don't know about the other lenses, but just remember the 17-40 is constant f4, which is slower than the lenses you mentioned before.

Fast, wide, cheap, good... pick any three ;-)

Seriously, you already know that there are damn few lenses that will give you what you are looking for. what's worse, on an APS-C body, 24mm is not all that wide, and that eliminates some choices. 16-20mm is really where you want to be, and the only one that really fits your bill in that area seems to be the Sigma 20/1.8.
I've heard decent reports of that lens, but I have *no* direct experience with it, so I'm not much of a help there.
Were I you, I would not even consider 24mm or longer options, but I would consider f/2.8 options, which broadens your range of choices somewhat.

I know you fancy a prime but the 17-40 L is pretty darn good and reasonably priced. I have the Sigma 24mm f1.8 (the wife's lens) and she uses it on a crop body (450D) it is not really THAT wide to be honest but gives very clean and acceptable results.

thanks SO much for your input :) does anyone know what the results are from one (any) of the sigma primes nearly wide open? say f2-2.8... also what good f2.8 primes are there that are that wide ( ~20mm or less) that are pretty sharp at 2.8?? thanks so much im just trying to get all the info i can before i dish out for another lens. btw the primary use of the lens will be band portraiture and concert photography although i know of many other uses for it ( i hate using flash on live shots b/c i love the harsh lighting idk y and i need something wide so i can be fairly close to them and something fast b/c its quite dim
