Can U believe this - the technology is mind-boggling!
This is a photograph of 2009 Obama Inauguration. You can see IN FOCUS the face of EACH individual in the crowd!!!
You can scan and zoom to any section of the crowd. . . wait a few seconds. . . and the focus adjusts to give you a very identifiable close up.
The picture was taken with a robotic 1474 megapixel camera (295 times the standard 5 megapixel camera).

Nice, however, the stitching doesn't work perfectly - look at this guy:
or these siamese twins
let's play a game - can you find some more?

Wonder if he is one of the fantastic 4 melts into concrete
guess there are many errors but still its a hell of a lens image :)

Wow, thanks for the interesting link! It appears to be a robotic camera mount rather than a lens, in other words, whatever camera you have you could get one of these mounts and create your own gigapan :-) And even more interesting, they plan to "post an 'open source' reference design for the GigaPan device for hobbyists who wish to build their own robotic pan-tilt device. " I'll certainly be checking back to their site!

The stitching works fine... it's just that the subjects can't move. Still pretty cool though... |

A quick search will turn up several recent threads on the Gigapan system, including this thread in which Bugzeye shows off the first image from a recent acquisition.
I just got Isaac a Lego Mindstorm NXT programmable robotics kit; once he's got the hang of it, I'm going to see if we can build our own version of a gigapan-type step-and-repeat camera mount ... :-)
BTW: The Gigapan technology was directly adapted from the camera mounts on the two Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity ... next time someone carps about the "space program being a waste of money" I will be happy to point to this as a modest example of a direct public benefit from the research. |

As far as I can tell it's not technically a lens. It just moves your P&S around, shooting a bunch of high-zoom shots and stitches them together.

The Gigapan is a computer-controlled step-and-repeat camera mount used to automate the acquisition of images to stitch into two-dimentional panoramic pictures, along with software which does the stitching. There are no optics involved except those of your own camera. You can accomplish the same with a panning tripod head, stitching software (such as Autostitch), and a lot of patience and RAM. |

I have had a gigapan for a couple of weeks now, I finally went to Milwaukee with it. I took a few night shots and a few day shots as well, Links Below.

Here are a couple of Pano Shots taken with the Gigapan Epic.
I am planning on a trip to Madison next Friday to do some panos around the Capital Square. |
