Just got my computer back from the shop yesterday- totally rebuilt the hardrive since the guys at Best Buy are useless- discovered that 300 dollars later. The Geek Squad is really the Dumb Squad but enough of that.

Anywho, I put the disk in, it does nothing in either drive- dvd or cdrom and it says dvd on the disk that came in the box. Tried to do the whole "run" thing but didn't work,

You may need to reinstall the drivers for the DVD and CD drives. I bought a computer from someone who wipped out everything and reinstalled OS and I had to reload every driver he had.

An optical drive should normally work without needing special drivers installed, at least for reading a disk. Check the following:

-Does the disk drive show up in your list of available drives in "my computer"?

-When you boot your computer, is the drive showing up as detected by the hardware on the initial bootup screens?

Checking both of these will tell us if the drive is simply not showing up under windows, or if it is a more fundamental problem at a hardware level.

Check that you can actually see your DVD drive on My Computer...if you can't...then they haven't hooked your dvd drive back up...therefore it won't read anything..lol! I have had that happen to me.

both drives are showing up an showing up as enabled and working properly. I uploaded a new game for my daughter earlier today and had no problems with that. This disk says DVD on it, but the DVD player isn't reading it- her game was a cdrom. I have photos I need to edit for my husband's ship and I can reinstall my old PSE5.0 because there is a virus attached to it. If anything I'll just have to wait till Monday and take this back into the computer guy and have him do it. I have to have these pictures done by Weds so I have a little time.

Can you download a trial version of the programme and then activate it via your key....that will get it onto your computer in time without needing the disc.

oh and when I do try to run it manually- you know, typing in "D:\Setup"

It says there is no disk in the drive even though there is. I go to properties for that drive and push eject and it will eject. I don't get it lol.

oh thanks for that idea Judi. Is there a reputable website to download it from? I just paid a lot of money for this today, I don't want to get charged again.

Will other disks read in the drive?

There should be a website on your programme box.

yep, other disks will read in the drive- not all disks, but some. I played a recorded dvd from last christmas with no problem.

I downloaded the trial version and then did the registration and it says I'm registered but didn't ask for any of the information off of what I bought today. I'm guessing it does that when the trial expires?

That should at least keep you out of trouble until you can get the problem fixed.

It could be just a minor incompatibility in the disk/drive combination. It may read just fine on other drives. I don't often run into those problems anymore, but it does still happen ocassionally.

Well from what I could figure out we need to update our dvd drive. So I think I'll just take it back to the computer guy on Mon and have him do that. Thanks for the heads up on the trial version Judi, greatly appreciated!
