Hi everyone, it's been a while since I have been taking photos. This is my great grandmother, and she needed a photo taken for her sorority, as she was voted Valentines Queen. I used lamps I had sitting around for lighting, and the editing I just sharpened, cropped. Please tell me what you think, what you would change, how could I improve next time? My main fear of portraits is lighting, I am never sure if it is good or not...Please help.

Lighting looks good to me. My only suggestion would be for her to stand a little further in front of the background so that the background is a bit more out of focus. |

I wouldn't sharpen maybe even a slight blur or diffusion ...the sharpen really brings out the wrinkles in a unflattering way... |

the lighting looks great in my opinion... i agree about the background, and also that you could blur the skin a tad just to smooth everything out. |

How you doing Jamie?
I might consider cropping a minuscule amount from the bottom so that the tiny glimpse of her under-wear is removed, and as Erik has already said, for next time position her a little further from the background. |

Hey Sara! Im doing as well as can be expected. I think I am going to re-edit this photo when I get home tonight, and smooth out some wrinkles with a soft blur, crop a little off the bottom, and maybe thats it. Thanks all for your suggestions. I will do this tonight and re-post tomorrow, oh and print her out a new photo, she will like not being able to see the wrinkles as well. Can you believe she is 88 years old???
