Anyone have one? Tried one? I'm looking at one with XP and thinking of using it for travel, on the road light surfing and email.
$299.99 Costco I'm trying to do this around this price.
Opinions welcome.

I've read a handful of reviews and the Aspire one has a rep as one of the better ones right now. It's probably marginally powered for photo editing, but I would think if you are running something lighter than CS4, it should be able to do it.

The tech sites I read think Acer is getting ready to release a newer version with a 10-inch screen soon.

I think all the current generation netbooks are fine for light surfing and email, but none will be good for stuff like heavy duty photoprocessing. They do differ quite a bit with respect to how the keyboard and the touch pad feel/operate, and whether the screen is glossy or not, so make sure you try them out if at all possible before you buy. In addition netbooks are currently evolving from 9 inch to 10 inch screens -- at the price quoted you are most likely looking at a 9 inch screen, so make sure that is compatible with your eyesight.

This is SO FUNNY to see this thread here! I was just looking at that little guy myself. Saw it first at Walmart of all places -- not my usual place for computing shopping, but whatever... ;)

I've been comparing the Aspire to the Dell Mini 9.

I would be using it for a slightly different purpose (tactical support for my motorcycle trips), but the obvious underlying emphasis is the same -- easy portability (and a heckuva a decent price -- that's in-line with what I paid for each of my Palm Pilots; I've had several of those over the years)...

Anyway, I don't have much real value to add at this point other than to say I'm very interested in folks' opinions as well.

For others who care, most distros of linux run on either platform without issue.

If you're looking at the current generation of netbooks with a view to storing photos, make sure you're looking at one with a decent sized HD (120-160gb are common), but if that's not a requirement then the 8-16gb flash-based (SSDs) netbooks are usually a bit cheaper. The other things to consider are screen size - netbooks are on the whole either 8.9" or 10" displays, all at 1024x600, so how good are your eyes? :), keyboard layout - some have unusual key placements (esp shift keys near cursor keys), others lack some F keys, etc, and finally battery size - most netbooks are either 3-cell (about 2-3 hours) or 6-cell (4-6 hours). Longer times are obviously good, but push both the price and weight up.

For the record, I personally really like the MSI Wind since its a good price for a 10" screen & HD model, the Dell Mini 9 (strange keyboard but cheap & silent), and the Aspire One (best 8.9" according to most) - I own the first two, and have been sorely tempted by the latter ;)

I set up the ACER Aspire one for my mother and I was quite impressed with it. If you're doing light surfing and e-mail it'll work just fine.

FTR - My mother loves nintendo games and I installed an N64 Emulator on it and it ran surprisingly well playing Banjo Kazooie.

I really want one of these, but since this is the first generation of them, I'm waiting a while. Once the second or third gens are out, then I'll buy one. First, I want a larger flash memory HD, the ability for more RAM, and a system that can handle Photoshop at least as well as my current laptop (which is not very gutsy).

For the price, the current netbooks are great, but without the ability to run some software, I just can justify having one as a 3rd computer.

my husband has that exact computer and he loves it

Yes, good advice all.
It is 8.9 inches and the MSI wind is 10". I'll have to see if I can try them both. Right now I've just been looking on-line.

cdrice Same thing here. I'll be sticking it in my T-bag for travel on my motorcycle, that and also car trips too.
My thinking was it's small enough to pack, I can check email, check in here etc. Not for images or post processing.
I never thought to check WalMart but it's worth a look.

Thanks everyone.

I've seen several Best Buys and Costco's with them.

bought on for my wife for xmas/ acer one aspire with 1gig ram, xp, 160 gig drive
biggest annoyance is the lack of virtual screen so you truelly are limited to 1024x600
(my old jvc-mini scrolls 1024x600 in a 1024x768 space )
but certainly feels zippy + the battery lasted a 2.5 hour flight (while i set up cygwin/x & whatnot)

am considering one for myself for traveling ....

I just bought a Dell mini 9 for my son. Thinking about getting one for myself for traveling. I don't like to do the editing on a laptop, and it would be great for portability and email/web surfing while on the go. Can also use it to move photos from a card onto an external hard drive for storage.

Bought the Acer Aspire One Black-Piano finish.Windows XP 8.9"/160 HHD
Four others at Costco buying and two of them were after their second!! They said family members wouldn't keep their hands off it so they needed two of them.
Very easy to set up, boot time is ok, speakers are ok, but it seems to do about everything my big laptop or desktop does.
No CD/DVD player which I think will be okay.
I can always run programs from a flash drive if I need too or download from the internet if needed.

I use a Lenovo S10 netbook with a 10" screen. Works really well for surfing, MSOffice is OK also. I use Elements 7.0 on this sometimes , it is slow but stll tolerable.
