My friend here (not computer-savvy at all) has a simple website for her local business (www.capegymkids.com) and she has been informed it has no "meta descriptions" or "meta keywords" listed to help search engines find it. She's hosted by GoDaddy. I am completely illiterate at this sort of stuff; I can *sort of* code simple sites but that's as much as I know.
So where does she go in her GoDaddy administration pages to add these tags?
R.
Well, N/M, she just located it on her own! Go Alice, go!

That info is usually part of the code for the site's home page.
Look at the site's main page with your browser and view the source code -- right near the top should be some tags which refer to "" (possibly with nothing betwen them in this case) -- basically, metadata = keywords ...
Bah, I just looked at it, and it's not obvious where the keywords would go. A WYSIWYG HTML editor would be handy -- I think I have Adobe's at work, but not here ...

Meta keywords go in the heading of her index file. I took a quick look and sure enough, there weren't any keywords. If you or her know how to download the index.php or index.html file from her godaddy server, I could give you more directions. |

Don't know how to do that, no. Is it easy?

Metadata are "invisible" keywords and phrases within your web site's HTML code. Search engines and browsers use these hidden words to help interpret the content of your site. Whoever created the site should have the tools to insert those tags. It's easy enough to do, but the method depends on your software. |

Here's the top of the html script- I added in 2 lines- the ones in all caps- Your can type in the necessary information, put it into the existing html and upload it. If that doesn't make sense, let me know!

Here's an example of my church's webpage meta info- you can see the keywords lilsted- that's what the search engines find

I just went back one more time to check the html source and it looks like it's been updated already
the meta name description and content have been filled in.

You have "church" listed twice -- is that cheating or just thoroughness? ;-) |

Yes, we seem to have solved the problem. We were following GoDaddy's instructions and nothing was happening. Rather, *she* was following... Except she missed a step. Seems to be working OK now.
Thanks,
R.

HAHA. I never noticed. Do you think if I listed church 400 times in the meta data that it would count as 400 matches in a search and move us up in the search engines?
And thoroughness? I think thoroughness is the fact that you read the code carefully enough to realize it was listed twice! |

Like most things, it helps if you do it religiously. Repetion / Practice / Repetition / Practice. |

you could try using mispelled words in the metadata - keywords.
and also using both plural and singular versions of words.
and also combinations of words that might be a potential search phrase - seperate from the one word instance.
like church, churches, community church, community churches, etc..
go too far with the repetition and it won't do you good, use it well, and it might....
you also want to make sure the actual index ( main page ) is full text that is relevant to the sites purpose. so repeat those meta keywords in the main page, and don't have it be a flash based page. the meta data, and index page are what is mostly used to index, and place your site within a given search engine.
