So I haven't really done much in the past year. It's been terribly busy to say the least- moving, husband going to a ship, 8yo starting new school, new baby came in July, husband in and out to sea. CRAZY! Anyhow, I started picking up the camera again and got these of my son the other morning. All natural light in his bedroom. My question is this. I shot with a 50mm mf 1.8 lens. ISO 400, f2.5, 1/50sec or around there. I played around quite a bit. I know some are not crystal clear- blame it on coffee and lil man moving the chair- it rocks. Not worried about the clarity at the moment. Worried more about the lighting. I'm posting an unedited version and an edited.
for the edited version- adjusted curves, sharpened and added warming filter

I think the brighter (edited) versions are lovely. Beautiful baby, too. But yeah, that seems like a normal amount of editing to me. |

I had a play with the first one out of curiosity:
Shadow/highlight is the main ingredient here, plus warming filter and a very slight gradient burn diagonally from upper left.

so that is how much editing a professional would do? It's been so long since I've done any portrait work and that was with my old Olympus- I don't remember having to do this much. I'm out of touch yes, but even my outside shots with partial sunlight are looking dim these days- partly due to using my 18-200mm VR lens a lot. I just pulled out the 50mm the other day on a whim. I used it for portraits last year for some people at church. I don't have an external flash but I am leaning towards all natural light photography now but find that I have to do more editing then I did with my Olympus. So this is normal? |

I like Bear_Music's idea of warming, and the gradient, but I wouldn't do too much of the shadow/highlight--I like the depth and shadows of the natural light, and wouldn't want to lose too much of it.
