I am using PSE7, when I go to save my photo in the last step, I keep getting the wrong size. I use the guidelines of 640 pixels (or 720, depending on the editing rules), but it is always to big. There has to be a better way to get the size of the photo (150kb/200kb) right, without it being a guessing game and making blind stabs in the dark...it takes me several tries and each edit adds another copy...
Today after making several attempts, I just started all over on the editing...still took me 2 more times to get it right...now my photo is very small for the web/challenge (yet it is sized at 385 pixels (the final sizing to get the 150 or less kb)...can anyone tell me where the secret door is so I can eliminate so many steps in saving my photo and changing and re changing the size!! It has to be right right here in front of me...I have read the help areas...no help at all so I am turning to you guys...Thank you.. |

1. Resize image to 640 or 720 pixels.
2. Go to edit>save for web
3. Click the flyout menu arrow and choose "optimize to file size" and choose the appropriate filesize (150kb for basic, 200 for advanced), click OK.
Now you have the best possible quality for the given dimensions and file size.
Be aware that the more you sharpen, the larger your file gets, so if you do less sharpening after resize it's easier to get a better file quality.

If you used save-as and optimize-to-file-size-150kb then it is not possible for the image to be 356kb. Therefore, you're missing something in these steps.
To reiterate: FIRST you resize the image dimensions to 640 or 720. THEN you go the the edit-save for web menu, and you find a little flyout arrow near the upper right of the resulting dialogue box: if you hover on it it shows the text "options". You click that for a list of options, one of which is "optimize to file size" ΓΆ€” you click THAT and you get another dialogue box where you type in the file size you want (150kb in basic, 200 in advanced) and click "OK". It will then prompt you for where you want to save the new file, and you park it wherever and you are all set.

ETA: the file in ELEMENTS, the one that is open, remains the same, and the same size. The NEW file is where you told it to be. It is possible you are looking at the open file in Elements and seeing that is still the same, and that is what is confusing you. So you need to go find the new file, wherever you saved it at, and THAT one will be the size you told it to be.
The reason for this, incidentally, is so that you can save off multiple copies of the original at different sizes for different uses, without having to reopen the original every time.

Janine, if you can find me on MSN messenger or Yahoo or Skype, I can talk you through it.
I need to leave in about 20 minutes, but it wouldn't take that long.
Do you want to do that?
Guess not, huh? ;-) I need to leave now, but we could do it some other time, if you like.
