I've got a few weddings booked this summer already. I'm looking for a new lens. I've got it narrowed down to the Canon 50mm f/1.2L or the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. I'm leaning towards the 50mm. I use to own the lens and I miss the buttery bokeh. I'm thinking the only time I would use the 70-200 beast would be during the ceremony. The 50mm would be used more. Which one would you guys pick?

Seeing as how you already have a 50mm f/1.4, seems like the 70-200 is a useful supplement to your range. I know when I shot my nephew's wedding a couple years ago, I used the 70-200 f/4 a LOT for outdoor candids at the reception.

I agree, I would go with the 70-200mm, I see you have already used one so you must know how good they are !

If you already have the 50mm/1.4, I would go for the 70-200mm/2.8. I was also dreaming about the 50mm/1.2 for awhile, but found reviews questioning the extra value over the 1.4 (read here) I personally chose to go with the 85mm/1.2, since I already had the 50/1.4 and have had the 70-200mm/2.8 for years. The 70-200mm/2.8 is a MUST HAVE lens in my book.

An 70-200mm f2.8 is a MUST in wedding photography.

Both of course. But which first? Since you have the 50 1.4 i'd say the 70-200 and then trade out the 1.4 for 1.2 at your earliest convenience.

I have both, use both, and wouldn't be without both at this point. The 85 1.2 might be next...I just got my first FF body last month and first wedding with it is tomorrow so I'm withholding opnions until I shoot more with the FF body.

There is a marked difference in look between the 50 1.2 and 1.4 though...

I've shot with both the 50 f1.4 and the 50 f1.2 and to be perfectly frank there is not a £800 worth of difference. Get yourself the 70-200 it is THE wedding photographers lens (or so Im told by a few top class wedding togs) the 50mm f1.4 can cut it very nicely and later if you cannot afford the 85mm f1.2 go grab the 85mm f1.8 because that is also an exceptional piece of glass.

I agree! While I have *not* shot with the 50/1.2, there is nothing I've seen that indicates it is worth several times the cost of the 50/1.4. In fact, I scoured the available data eagerly thinking that if it were good enough it would be worth it as an astro lens... but it seems it is not really that superior to the 1.4, and it's less than a stop faster.

shoot a portrait wide open with both. then judge. the look of the image from the 1.2 is just so much nicer, the bokeh so much better. It's hard to describe, but like porn, you'll know it when you see it.
Obviously 1/3 of a stop isn't worth $1000, so you have to look beyond the specs.

But then perhaps it's not worth $1000 more to you. It is to me.

Rent them both then decide.

I love the 70-200 lens. I used to predominantly shoot the 100-400L but now that i have the 70-200...its hard to pick the 100-400 up unless i need major zoom. The pictures are so sharp fully open...amazing lens...even at slow shutter speeds...

I personally would take the 50mm 1.2 over the 70-200 anyday, but then I also have the 85mm and 135mm. Try shooting an image like this with anything but a 50mm 1.2.

I had the 70-200 and sold it this last fall, I found that I only used it 4 times last year, three of them were during a couple of days road trip and once was a concert. I would have kept it but my buddy has one and offered to lend it to me those 4 times a year. Prime lenses for me, thank you.

Was a while ago, about 6 weeks, only shot 16 weddings last year. Why?

Just wondered what lenses you would use for wedding as the OP wanted the lens for a wedding.. I think if he already has the 50f1.4 then a 70-200 is a better choice to own and that there is not £800 difference between the 1.2 and the 1.4 IMO of cause.

I use to own both the 50 f/1.2 and 70-200mm. It's true, once you shoot with L lenses you cant go back. The images the f/1.2L produces are beautiful. The blur is sooo creamy smooth. It makes the images from the f/1.4 look harsh. I sold the f/1.2 to help pay for my Mark III and sold the 70-200 because it was a monster. I never really used it because it was so big. But this was all before I was making any money in photography...but now I am.

The 50mm was on sale at amazon for $1280. Normally it's $1400 so I jumped on the deal. (Anyone wanna buy my f/1.4???) My first wedding isnt until May so that will give me some time to learn how to use this lens. Then I'll pick up the 70-200mm hopefully when Canon has the spring rebates. Does anyone know anything about the Canon rebates?

Question for all the wedding photographers out there: If you had both these lenses, which one would you use more? If you don't, what's your fave wedding lens. And if you had to shoot a wedding with one lens, what would it be???

When you shoot weddings which lens do you find yourself using more?

I'am a Nikon guy but have Nikon 50 1.4 + 70-200 2.8 and use both at weddings - each wedding situation is different and would not give up either. You have to be prepared to produce the proper product.

Depends on which part of the wedding (prep, ceremony, recep), room slze, lighting, etc.

Ceremony: two cameras (16-35mm on one, 70-200mm on the other)
Prep: 24-70mm is real handy, but do a lot with 50mm 1.4 as well (depends a lot on the room size and lighting)
Formals: 85mm for B&G shots, 24-70mm or 16-35mm depending on size of family formals
Reception: two cameras (pretty much 24-70mm w/flash, 70-200mm for candids, 50mm for natural light detail shots)

Primarily use these 3-4 lenses with two cameras.
