So I've tried a few IR shots w/ my D80. A couple of issues...

Custom white balance is hard to achieve--the camera rejected my first 5-10 attempts at shooting the grass. (When I process my images in Camera Raw the color temp is around 2000--all the way to the left)

My light metering might as well be thrown out the window... I'm needing to do 30-45 second exposures at f/3.5... is this right?

Just checking here because I don't know anyone personally with experience.

Thanks!

What kind of filter are you using, what is your ISO set at? This should all go into figuring out your exposure. Some cameras also are more sensitive to IR than others. My d70 is very sensitive, where my d200 isn't as sensitive. I use a Hoya r72 filter, and through trial and error I find that with the d200 my exposures are usually ISO 100, F/16, and my exposure time is usually right around the 90 sec mark. I've never doen a white balance check, I just shoot at whatever Kelvin temp I feel will give me the result I'm looking for.

...yeah... Hoya filter. Are you setting the temp at 2000--lower/higher? I had my ISO at 200 I think...

Good to see the long times though... I knew I need a tripod, but I thought it would be more like 1-5 seconds vs. 60 seconds or more.

If you shoot raw, the temp is really not relevant.

Exposure time is dependent on amount of ir light in the frame - it may seem light outside but it may not be the 'right' kind of light. Bright sunlight gets the fastest times, dusk and overcast days will give you long times. Various types of light bulbs will give you various times. It is best to experiment with your camera, watch the histogram, and shoot manual exposure.

Before I had my camera converted, a bright sunny day at 100 ISO and F/8 would be about 25 secs. A not so bright day would be up to a minute and still be under exposed. (This is Canon 300D)

There are lots of great tutorials available on the web and I think one here from Judi...

Yes you have just discovered the D80 is crap for infrared :(
The best nikon unmodified cameras for ir in order are D50,D70 and D40.

With D80 forget white balance shoot raw and set shutter speed to ages.

Probaly better off using your G6 read here.
