I love my XM and hope they stay around..but then I'm not buying more time with them right now - I'll way and see what the future holds first.
This is just one of many companies that will fold or have serious issues when they can't refi their debt. If this tight money keeps up for another 6 months then I fear there won't be much of a christmas and a depression may be a reality.
Stores order their christmas inventory about now and borrow money to buy it, paying off that debt next january. But if they can't borrow to buy then factories won't be making it, stores will be empty and it will not be a pleasant 2010.
Long term this may encourage companies to have realistic business plans. Who out there, on an individual basis, would go into a business plan like Sirius/XM (or a lot of others out there- it took amazon how many years to turn a profit //news.cnet.com/2100-1017-819688.html - their first net profit ever was announced this week))
There is little reward without risk, but some of these biz plans/ideas take a very long time to pay off. And amass a lot of debt in the mean time.

Sex is excellent value for the money. If 2010 is unpleasant, I suggest we all grab our S.O.'s and sex it up like it's 1999. But be safe out there!

I subscribed to XM before it merged with Sirius because my car came with 3 months free. It's the only radio I listen to. Between news and talk and music by genre (with much less commercials), I'll be really sad if they aren't able to make it work. |

I've been following this for a while now, too. I think subscribers won't have anything to worry about (at least I certainly hope so). With a subscription base that large, and so many "important" services tied to it (such as real time weather and navigation), I can't imagine it would just up and disappear -- someone would pick it up and continue services. As one of the articles linked in the OP states, it would likely be a restructuring, not a liquidation.
I use my XM service much more for the weather and navigation aides on my motorcycle trips than the music. Honestly, the music is just a nice bonus for me... I really hope with whatever happens, they will address one of my pet peeves with the service -- the bandwidth they allocate per channel is so limited and the data so compressed that it obviously affects sound quality. They recently introduced a few "HD" channels, which sound like what I *expect* digital satellite radio to sound like. Overall, I'd rather have fewer stations with higher audio quality than lots of channels that sound like crap.
Anyway, tangent, sorry -- I digressed. I just hope whatever happens, the end result will be focused on quality rather than trying to offer more and more niche channels at lower quality. (An Abba-only channel? Seriously?)
