Hi Guys
as most probably know that we here in Victoria Australia are now in the midst of our most horrendous bushfires we have ever experienced
the lives perished at the moment total in excess of 180.
One of my dear friends has lost his home but he and his wife are ok.
What is even more horrendous for them is that the local Authorities directed some of their neighbours in their street to see refuge from the blaze in their home as it was a brick dwelling i heard from my friend today and he said when the roof started to cave in he begged them to seek a way out
and 11 of the 20 did...... sadly 9 lives were lost in their home and they will never return to their home.
the main reason i am writing you is to perhaps set a challenge that will build hope and a sense of "YOU ARE NOT ALONE"
It will pass on to my friends and others effected a sense that they are not alone and the WHOLE world is behind them and the rest of their family and friends who have lost so much.
Having witnessed what a great community this is i have no doubt that we can lift my friends spirits and all affected by this tragedy as i will do all i can to share the results of the challenge if it is undertaken.
sorry for the essay but i felt it is so worthy of a challenge
thank you
Ter

Ter, that is a fantastic idea, this disaster is an absolute appalling tragedy. Please let your friends know that all of Australia is with them, here in NSW all communities are organizing fund raising everywhere from Primary Schools to Clubs, Pubs and all sorts of Community groups. I tried to give blood on Monday morning but the first available time they could give me was Thursday!! Normally you can walk in off the street and give blood anytime, they have been inundated with blood donors since the call went out
We are all thinking of you and share your shock and horror, I hope that the DPC Community can support this in some way.

From another part of the world, I can tell you that the tragedy of the wildfires is just as appalling from afar. My heart goes out to those effected by this disaster and their families. I certainly hope that the stories of some of the fires being deliberately set are not true.
Australia and Canada share many similarities, and I know Canadians everywhere are saddened and shocked by the events taking place. I hope that things get better very quickly and that loss of life does not increase. Good luck. As you stated. You Are Not Alone. |

I've been following the news because I have several friends in Aus and we drove through or near the worst areas just over a year ago. The pictures have left me speechless with a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I can't even begin to comprehend...

Tim
that is great news that many are getting behind helping those in dire need
i personally am working Saturday and all the O/T i would have earned is being matched by the company as any donation anyone makes will also be
Ernie
i couldnt agree more about the similarities our two countries share
unfortunately it does appear that some of the fires are the work of arsonists
lets hope that they can be caught and taken out of our society forever
Shiela
its impossible to comprehend how devestating these fires have been
i hope your friends are ok if i can help contact them for you if you want pm me
so who is up for the Challenge? |

Thank you for the offer :) The closest are in Werribee, so they're safe.
But such a beautiful area... and such wonderful, down-to-earth people... simply gone... |

I am very very very saddened as well with the catastrophe. My country went through a similar experience in 2007. Now while I drive to my Dad's birth place in the south, I see barren land reaching the horizon where trees once stood. So sad... These tragedies affect us all....I am in.

I see that the police have a couple of people in custody, related to the fires.
google news article
I would like to be in this challenge as well, but I am also wondering what would be appropriate images for this project.

this is part of what JulietNN sent me
i hope it explains what i mean
people are or may not want happy bright cheerful landscapes or happy events. But they are not going to want non happy photos. I had a couple of ideas, but the main one i can think of is people sticking a sign saying you are not alone with there state or town name.
really its open to your interpretation of how you want to pass onto those effected that you are thinking of them . |

If I'm reading Ter right, it's not really a challenge, or at least not against each other. What is a challenge is to all ( collectively ) think of appropriate images to show solidarity of support and thought for the affected areas / people.
What about something that we/someone could make a collage from, you know like a panoramic shot where all the images are "stitched" together. If we all took a photo of ourselves ( ok obviously get someone else to take it, but we set them up ) with you arms out, hands just at border, then some stitch them all together, we coudl create a ring of people round teh world. Make sure your background depicts/represents your location.
Just a thought.............. |
