I am trying to get an idea how much it would cost to have a searchable database
website for my images. One where I could upload new images as I go along.
Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much that would cost?

have you ever heard of photoshelter?
I may try to link to my existing site onto photoshelter. (probably simplest)
I want one that people can search and order files for.... this I suspect is a big job, I guess I am just wondering how big and expensive.
I may look a little different but something like this
//www.grandmaison.mb.ca/

There are also services like SmugMug that combine searchable database for images, with hositng, and photo sales. For around $10 per month, you can customize the site to look pretty much just the way you want ... your design, logos, personality. SmugMug's only one of many. |

My web development has always been for a company, never freelance, but I'd venture a guess that if you got someone who knew what they were doing to design and code a site from scratch it would take less than two weeks if they worked at it full time. That said, a professional would likely still charge a fair chunk of change. (think $30+/hour * 80 hours = $2400)
With an add on Craigs list you might be able to get something for much cheaper - a student or recent grad maybe - it's not really a difficult thing to do for a competent developer, but I'd say that in the end you would only get what you pay for.
Another thought, if you were hiring a single person you'd probably get a site slanted one way or another towards better design or better code as it's a rare person who excels at both. If you've done the design yourself that could significantly lessen the production time. |

if you own a domain and server can support PHP/MySQL then try coppermine, it is open source and it will work for you. It provides search within the title, caption, keywords, ownername and filename. As such you wouldn't need to do any development but might need to do some graphics thing that depends on you. |

thanks folks, that gives me some ideas at least.
I do not own a server or domain.... and probably never will given the option.
But 2400 is a good rough guide.
I will check into smugmug it is cheaper than photoshelter.

Seachable database is pretty simple to setup. It also depends on your internet provide. Do they have some database inplace already? If they don't, you'll need arrange something with your provider.
Of course, if you want to be able to just click and upload and have the images resized automatically, that'll be more programming. This will also add complication to the project.
I have a simple site for family pictures. I resize the images automatically with photoshop. Then I have a program that takes an XML file and reads through my image directory and updates a MySQL database (already setup with my provider). I have to manually upload the images with FTP. I could've automated the FTP process, but that'd take time I didn't want to put into it.

I think i could do the design, I actually like what I have pretty much already tho it is just a mac.com template one.
I have no idea of what my service provider has in place, I guess I could check with them easy enough...
I had no idea so much went into one of these sites. |
