Guys,

Please bear with me if this has been discussed before, I just couldnt get a concise answer.

I am looking for input on how would it matter to use DX lenses on FF bodies?

- Vignetting
- Border performance
- Focal length interpretation (crop factor)

Anything else one should be concerned about when accruing DX lenses but expecting a FF upgrade in future?

Thanks a lot.

There are some DX lenses that DO fill a FF sensor or come very close. As a matter of fact, the new 35mm f/1.8G comes very very close; it just has some falloff on the corners. I don't know any others off the top of my head but I know I've seen other DX lens tests on FF bodies.

Anyways, all Nikon's FF bodies have the option to autocrop the sensor so that DX lenses perform as they should. You of course get a reduced MP count, though. On the D3 and D700 it's 5.1MP and the D3x is 10MP I believe.

Thank you.

I dont think one would mind (I wouldnt:-) cropped images from a FF camera.. as long as the center performance is as expected.

Yup.

Some people seem to bitch about the D700 not greying out the frame like the D3 does in autocrop mode and only giving guidelines, but if you turn off focus point highlighting (the focus points illuminating red in the viewfinder) then the D700 will grey out the frame as well.
